Much to my Surprise, it took over three hours to locate any Scarlet Waxcaps Hygrocybe coccinea yesterday at Kerridge Hill. However, invariably when you do, it's usually a Family affair! One of our most strongly linked Waxcaps to grassland Mosses #FungiFriends #Fungi #Mycology

I have pictures of waxcaps to share but I'm not as good at identifying those as I am other fungi. I can tell they are waxcaps and that's about it. Though lets start with one I tentatively identified and got confirmation I was correct. The blackening waxcap (Hygrocybe conica) #fungi #fungifriends

Snowy Waxcap (Cuphophyllus virgineus) A common waxcap but it still prefers undisturbed and untreated land although seems more tolerant than other waxcaps. They can be found in parkland, garden lawns, churchyards and pastures around autumn time. - Wild Food UK #fungi #fungifriends

Today's birding looked like a fog out. The fog never lifted.
But a beautiful male Hen harrier made my day. An unmistakable shape of a Whitetailed Eagle

Solidarity with whoever else on Bluesky is not seeing waxcaps this season.

So far just one Snowy Waxcap (Cuphophyllus virgineus).

November! Halfway through the ’ber months. Look out for:

• Owls (especially listen for tawny owls)
• Starling murmurations at dusk
• Autumn colour in the trees
• Fungi, including colourful waxcaps

Take a moment to notice November 🍂

Last week we held a very enjoyable, very wet, waxcap training session led by David from Pembrokeshire Fungus Recording Network. We found 14 species of waxcap and 3 other species of CHEGD grassland fungi including Skinny clubs, and Mealy pinkgills, at a cemetery site. 🍄

Buczacki says they might be hallucinogenic, but other waxcaps aren't so I doubt it.

A witch has dropped her hat here!

(Finally, after a very slow start, we are getting a few waxcaps, I’ve still not seen any corals or earth tongues, nor spindles or clubs - it’s such a weird year for fungi, and considering that’s almost certainly climate related that really is scary!)

As well as Grannom Caddisfly (Brachycentrus subnubilis) larvae in River Rede, along border of Northumberland National Park, leaves affixed to stones, maybe by Potamophylax cingulatus Caddisfly larvae? On riverside meadow, a good crop of Snowy & Meadow (Cuphophyllus pratensis) Waxcaps. #riverflies

Not just waxcaps... the whole CHEGD list is absent so far at Hampton Heath, SW London.

Parrot waxcaps are real shape-shifters too. The green tends to fade toward yellows and pinks as they age, so catching one this emerald is perfect timing. It honestly looks like glass.

The Leasowes isn't far and has both waxcaps and woods, St Kenelms churchyard is a bit further out, the middle of the Hagley Road at Quinton often has interesting stuff like Lactarius mairei. Although it has been terrible for all grassland species, so there might not be much to see
