As much as I’ve enjoyed the works of WDFA and Pixar for half of my life, I’m personally more into indie animation and animes lately. I can like other stuff but acknowledge the good/bad at the same time. In a way, Disney adults are still people with feelings.

Like say what you want about Lord and Miller, they at least settle on a vision eventually. But WDFA feels like it’s own special hell of focus-tested executive meddling given the movies that they’ve made lately where decent films like Encanto feel like they’ve “escaped” rather than released

Back when Eisner was at war with a rebellious Pixar, he created the WDFA Steamboat Willie label as a rival 3D studio, and gave the world “Chicken Little”…The rest is tragedy. 🤭
As for why Eisner kicked out 2D, Shrek 2’s success cowed him into thinking audiences now HATED princesses….

I used to work at WDFA. When Disney bought Pixar and Ed Catmull was put in charge, he called us all into the theater and said there'd be a 50% staff layoff. I asked if we could make new movies from 1980s shows and brought up TaleSpin. He said "we aren't in the business of rehashing old IP." 🙄

Honestly, letting Lasseter become the head of Disney Feature Animation was one of the worst things to happen cause they forced WDFA to follow Pixar’s strict and stagnant story formula, and he’s also the reason we only get twist villains cause he HATES tradition camp Disney villains apparently

It would be years before WDFA had a massive hit - I don’t regret leaving but damn why did I have to work there at one of the lowest points in their history? Same thing happened in the 70s when Don Bluth tried pitching his ideas and then quit to go make Secret of NIMH, which was badass
