Stressing out about how much and how often to post sub-chapters of my #boysLove #gayRomance #webnovel "Fractured Heart: the Tale of the Pop Star and the Pauper" to the various free BL webnovel sites so I can finally drum up a readership 😅

Dear webnovelists: how much and how often do you post? Just spent maybe an hour starting to split the 8 chapters I've posted of my webnovel to patreon so far (one chapter every friday, but these are chonky chapters, around 5-10k words each, depending on where it makes sense to end scenes, etc). From various researching, it seems like the average advised webnovel chapter length is 1-3k words long, uploaded frequently (some say daily at least for the first few weeks, then maybe slow to 3xweek or so after that, after presumably establishing a readership) After splitting up the 8 chapters posted so far to 1-3kish sections that are more or less natural splits (instead of like, mid-crucial-conversation) that gives me: ch1 p1-3 ch2 p1-3 ch3 p1-3 ch4 p1-3 ch5 p1-3 ch6 p1-3 ch7 p1-2 ch8 p1-4 24 chapters 3.4 weeks with daily releases 24 chapters 3.4 weeks with daily releases 1 more month of chapters, assuming 3 parts per chapter: 24 + (4 x 3) = 36 36 / 7 = 5.1 weeks at 1 daily chapter assuming 3 weeks of daily chapters = 21 chapters 36 - 21 = 15 drop to 3 chapter uploads a week (mon/wed/Fri) = 5 weeks more until caught up with early chapters in march starting april 4 (sat) I'll release a sub-chapter a day for 5 weeks until May 9, then drop to tu/th/sat uploads 3x a week for 5 more weeks until June 20 (and all the while I'll still be releasing the full length chapters on patreon every friday, so i'll have even more by then) Overall...it's so confusing, but just releasing one "real" chapter a week isn't drawing in readers, and I do, in fact, want more people than just me to read the book I've been pouring so much of myself into :p I just started writing chapter 112 yesterday (in the sense of "real" chapters that are, as I said, 5-10k words long) so if I were to chop them up into an average of 3 sub-chapters each, I could theoretically have enough writing to post 336 chapters already, aka enough for a daily sub-chapter every single day for 48 weeks straight 😂 And that's if I were to end the book abruptly right at the chapter I'm on now (which I have no plans to do, my planned out timeline of events is already so many pages longer, and we haven't even gotten fully into the "theo starts getting his shit together while lys falls apart" arc that's coming up sooner than later 😂 It's just so much work figuring out how much and how often to post, in the hopes of gaining a readership...and so many sites that I've researched don't have scheduled post functions, meaning I'd have to find some time that day to manually upload everything. It's exhausting just thinking about it all, but I really do want to expand my readership, like I said. If it's not too much hubris to say it, I really love my characters and watching how they're growing into their own, and so far all the friends and contacts I've shown it to like it as well, even hard-to-please ones who aren't generally into romantic novels :p so I'm choosing to believe there's a "market" of people out there who will love my story too, I just have to figure out what the magic spell is to let them know that my webnovel exists in the first place!! 🤞😫 (oh and all this is ignoring the complication of having to come up with "SFW" and "NSFW" versions of all my chapters once they get to the point of doing the nasty....the 'smut' is by far not the main point of the story, but so much character development happens between the 'sexually explicit' parts that it's gonna be a challenge to cut all that out, plus you can have pivotal plot moments involved even in the midst of a graphic (consentual) description....and pretty much all these websites are ambiguous at best and straight-up ban "Sexually explicit" writing on average, so that further FURTHER complicates things....) My head hurts just thinking about it lol. Time to go write some more fun fluffy scenes before I have to get back into more trauma-dumping for them to bond over, since that's, like, the main conceit of the whole story (how even a rich, famous pop star and poor, religiously oppressed EDM who has suffered various forms of emotional and physical abuse can still find enough in common through their various forms of trauma to 'mend their fractured hearts' together)

my fellow webnovelists, when you put out a chapter, how far ahead are you usually in the draft behind the scenes?

(It would seem I am considered by some to be on the canonical list of innovative webnovelists, and I am here to tell you that the audience for that sort of thing is exactly as big as you'd think.)

this reminds me of how webnovelists in China use ao3 to host their sex scenes & tell their audience to go look there for the extras
