Pike means "pointed hill". The derivation of Eccles is unclear but is an old Celtic/Romano-British name for a church.

#bugsworthbasin #peakforestcanal #derbyshire was built in 1794. Among other things 600 tons of #limestone was transported every day. The canal which runs for 15 miles is now part of a #park and #heritage and #nature trail.

One of the best things about going for a walk in the Derbyshire countryside around Whaley Bridge is coming home.
I love returning by the canal towpath at the end of the day & rounding the corner to see the Transhipment Warehouse, with its cheery lights gleaming across the dark water.

This year the ceremony has relocated to its new home at the canal basin, where carols and the Nativity story will follow the lantern parade, which has also changed to a new route along Shallcross Incline.
