What bird is this? 🤔 (See alt text for clue and photo credit) 🌍 #whatbird | #birdsoftheworld | #birds 🦉🐧🦆🦩🦅🪿🦚
A small vibrant bird (13–14 cm / 5.1–5.5 in long) perched on a weathered branch, showcasing its bright red conical bill, striking violet cheeks, black chin, rich chestnut-brown body, and dark blue tail. Clue: Found in the arid and semi-arid savannas of Southern Africa, look for a splash of brilliant violet on the cheeks, a bold red bill, and a rich chestnut coat. Fun Fact: These birds regularly allopreen each other—meaning they gently groom each other's feathers (especially around the crown)—and can frequently be spotted huddled closely together in dense foliage. Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1) Text source: Gemini (Edited) 📷: Photo by Derek Keats via Wikimedia Commons (CC BY 2.0) https://www.flickr.com/people/93242958@N00

A side-profile photo of a relatively large bird (around 46 cm / 18 in long) perched on a branch amidst green foliage, showing its scaly black-and-grey textured chest, featherless black face, hooked beak, and vibrant scarlet-red wing and belly plumage. Clue: Often nicknamed the "Dracula parrot" due to its gothic black-and-red colour scheme, this striking bird is endemic to the rainforests of New Guinea and features a distinctively bald, vulture-like head. Fun Fact: Unlike most seed-cracking birds of its kind, it is an extreme dietary specialist that feeds almost exclusively on sticky wild figs. Its featherless face is an evolutionary adaptation that keeps its facial feathers from getting permanently matted with fruit pulp! A side-profile photo of a relatively large waterbird (55–63 cm / 22–25 in long) standing in shallow water, showcasing its scaly patterned body, a bright teal-and-white wing patch (speculum), a black bill with a yellow tip, and a distinct orange-red spot at the base of the bill. Clue: Look for a colourful bill featuring a bright yellow tip and a reddish-orange spot at the base, paired with a striking scaly body and a vibrant green wing patch. Fun Fact: Pop culture fans might recognise a distant relative inspiration here-the Pokémon character Farfetch'd is based on the spot-billed duck! A medium-sized bird (around 30–34 cm / 12–13.5 in long) perched on a rustic wooden stump against a soft, blurred green background. It features a striking black crest on its head, a dark blackish head and upper chest, and vibrant dark blue feathers along its wings and body, with faint light blue streaks above its eye. Clue: "I'm a charismatic western forest dweller known for my distinctively punk-rock black crest, dark hood, and brilliant splash of deep blue." Fun Fact: These birds are master impressionists! Related to crows and magpies, they can expertly mimic the calls of various predators, such as red-tailed hawks and great horned owls, to scare away other birds from food sources. A close-up photo of a small bird (14–16 cm / 5.5–6.3 in long ) perched on a thin, bare tree branch against a soft blurred background. It features a black-and-grey mottled head, a bright orange-buff breast and shoulder patch, a white belly, and a sharp yellow bill with a dark tip. Clue: Often called the "mountain finch," this migratory beauty is famous for gathering in massive, noisy winter flocks known as "clouds." Fun Fact: These birds are absolute fanatics for beech mast (beechnuts)! In years when beech trees produce a heavy crop of nuts, huge numbers can congregate in a single forest, forming flocks that can number in the hundreds of thousands or even millions of birds! A portrait photo of a medium-large bird (48–55 cm / 19–21.5 in long) perched on a thin tree branch against a soft, blurred green background. The bird features a large beak split diagonally into bright yellow on top and black on the bottom, a bright yellow bib framing a red-and-black body, and bright lime-green skin around its dark eyes. Clue: "I inhabit the lush, rain-soaked forests of the Pacific slope in Colombia and Ecuador, and my name comes from the extremely biodiverse region I call home!" Fun Fact: Despite having a massive bill, its beak is surprisingly lightweight because it is made of a spongy, honeycomb-like structure of keratin. It doesn't just help them pluck fruit from distant branches—it also acts as a built-in air conditioner, radiating heat away from the body to keep cool in tropical heat! A side-profile photo of a medium-sized nocturnal bird perched on a thin tree branch. The bird's mottled grey and brown feathers give it the appearance of tree bark, with its eyes nearly closed and beak tilted slightly upward in its signature camouflage pose against a blurred leafy background. Clue: "I may look like a species of owl, but I'm actually more closely related to nightjars! Native to Australia, I master the art of looking just like a tree branch!" Fun Fact: When threatened or trying to blend in, they stretch their bodies upright, close their eyes to narrow slits, and remain perfectly still, mimicking a dead tree branch so convincingly that predators walk right past them. A side-profile photo of a small songbird (17–18 cm / 6.7–7.1 in long) perched on a light-coloured rock. The bird features velvety jet-black plumage across its body and face, contrasted sharply by a striking patch of bright white feathers on top of its head and a white rump/tail base. Its eye is black and its beak and slender legs are a dark grey. Clue: This desert-dwelling bird of the Sahara and Arabian Peninsula takes its common name directly from the striking white patch wearing atop its dark head! Fun Fact: The young of this species aren't born with their signature white cap! Juveniles have an all-black head and only grow their bright white crown as they mature into adulthood. A photo of a large wading bird (68–81 cm / 27–32 in long) captured mid-flight against a soft blue sky. The bird has white plumage with black wing edges and tail, long pinkish legs extended behind it, and a distinctive grey, curved beak. It carries a leafy green branch and twig in its bill, gathering materials for nest building. Clue: Its name comes from the distinct gap between the upper and lower mandibles, tailored perfectly for its favourite snack! Fun Fact: Despite what the shape of its bill might suggest, it doesn't use the gap like a nutcracker! Instead, the opening acts like a specialised pair of tweezers, allowing the bird to extract the meat from snail shells without crushing the shell into fragments. Interestingly, young chicks are born without this gap—it develops only as they mature into adulthood. A photo of a medium-sized, stocky bird (29–32 cm / 11.5–12.5 in long) perched on a thin, leafless wooden branch. It features a soft pastel blue-turquoise head, neck, and underparts, a warm chestnut-brown back, and a striking bright turquoise tail tip. It has a stout black beak, dark eyes with a slight black stripe extending through them, and is set against a soft, out-of-focus background of blue sky and subtle green foliage. Clue: This brightly coloured visitor to Europe and Western/Central Asia gets its common name from the striking aerial acrobatics, flips, and rolls it performs during courtship flights! Fun Fact: Nestlings of this species have a unique self-defense mechanism: when threatened by predators, they vomit a foul-smelling orange liquid all over themselves! This deters hungry attackers and alerts returning parents to potential danger around the nest. A photo of a small, pale raptor perched upright on a weathered wooden post, looking down over its left shoulder. Its plumage is a light sand-brown with creamy, spotted underparts, yellow legs with sharp talons, and bright dark eyes with a yellow eye-ring. Clue: This pale, fierce little hunter of the Great Plains is the lightest-coloured race of North America’s smallest falcon! Can you name this subspecies? Fun Fact: Like others of its species they do not build their own nests. Instead, across the northern plains and parklands, they heavily rely on taking over abandoned stick nests built by Black-billed Magpies or crows. The bird features a vibrant red patch on the back of its crown, a black forehead, and a long, sharp black beak pointing slightly upward. Its face and neck are light-coloured with fine black streaks, while its back and wings display a striking yellow-green plumage covered in dark black bars and spots. Clue: Look closely at my back and chest! My name comes from the distinct, ladder-like black bars and spots pattern covering my olive-green plumage. Fun Fact: Unlike many of its kind that spend almost all their time high up in trees, this South American species frequently hunts for food down on the ground, using its long beak to dig into soil and logs to feast on its favourite food: ants!
