A group of wheat breeders from Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, and Zimbabwe gathered in Addis Ababa for CIMMYT’s second Global Wheat Program Community of Practice (CoP), aiming to strengthen regional collaboration and adopt modern breeding tools. The workshop focused on addressing shared challenges like climate change, drought, erratic rainfall, and emerging diseases through genomic, digital, and data-driven approaches. Participants explored technologies such as the Enterprise Breeding System (EBS), Bioflow, and Field Book to improve efficiency in parent selection, trial management, and data analysis. Dr. Shitaye Home emphasized that collective efforts are essential to tackle these challenges, while Masawi Jairos highlighted the need for continued training to integrate EBS into national programs. The event also featured discussions with Ethiopian officials and visits to research centers, reinforcing partnerships to build resilient wheat systems. The CoP underscores the importance of shared knowledge and capacity building to develop drought-resistant and disease-tolerant wheat varieties, ensuring sustainable production for farmers.
