🥰 It's time to test the next location of my birdsong guessing game Chorus Quest!

🦅 Visit Ynis-Hir in Wales - 12,000 years of birdsong, 800 hectares, one Dyfi estuary.

🐜 Come and guess who's singing, help me squish the bugs

I'm running out of ideas for what will be the next garden tick? I'm up to White tailed eagle and black winged kite as possibilities. A sat tagged eastern imperial eagle flew directly over our village. Other than that. Wood warbler? Collared fly? Whinchat? YBW? I've seen griffon vulture 1km away.

For #SmallBirdSaturday by @janesgallery.bsky.social I've got my first ever picture of a female Whinchat, taken a few weeks ago on its migration route across the Alps. Lacks the striking colouring of the male, but still a perfect example of a Little Brown Bird

Minutes after I photographed yesterday's Whinchat I saw more #BrownBirds in the Alpine meadow I was visiting last month. One was this Water Pipit - yet another birding first for me that thrilling day.

BTO’s own Louise Bacon temporarily traded the flatlands of Cambridgeshire for the rugged landscape of the Isle of Rum in this week’s featured blog post: www.bto.org/get-invo... She even managed to get there by public transport! @btobirds.bsky.social BTO Scotland #Ornithology

Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is #LittleLegs – any bird with small legs.
The alternative theme is #Brown

Among dry grasses lingers a brown guest on short legs, ready for the next big journey. 🪶

(1/) The UK Bird Indicators have recently been updated, which BBS data feeds into. The upland indicator has shown that the smart Whinchat dropped in numbers by almost two thirds 1994–2024. Read on to find out more… @btobirds.bsky.social JNCC RSPB Science #Ornithology

(2/) Some recent research led by Andy Stanbury from RSPB has shown that habitat related changes, especially woodland expansion, may be a significant driver in the decline of this species across the UK in recent years:
Habitat and other environmental correlates of the decline of breeding Whinchats Saxicola rubetra in the UK since the mid-1990s
Declines in Whinchat Saxicola rubetra breeding abundance in the UK vary with habitat and other environmental conditions. To test for associations between changes in Whinchat abundance between 1994 a...

Long eared Owl from this morning #BirdingScotland One of very few highlights of what has been another very poor month. No Whinchat, Lesser Whitethroat or Garden Warbler this autumn, with the latter presumably missed for the year. Mid way through Oct and still not seen a Goldcrest!!

Whinchat declines track upland habitat loss across the UK. These BBS indicators are exactly the kind of data that feeds into global biodiversity assessments and why COP17 this month matters. Two thirds gone in 30 years.

6/ There’s been a 19% decline in the Upland Breeding Bird Indicator since 1994. Over the long term Peregrine Falcon has declined, along with Dotterel and Whinchat, whereas Red Kite and Stonechat have increased.
