Seventy-two-year-old grandmother Moi Ha chewing beetle nut. She will need the green betel nut (buai), a jar of lime powder (kambang) and a bean-like green called mustard (daka). She breaks the betel nut open by cracking the shell with her teeth. She then takes the meaty center out of the shell and starts chewing it. She will chew the betel nut for 2-5 minutes or until it forms a wad in your mouth. She slightly moistens the mustard seed in her mouth and dips it into the jar of lime powder. She moves the betel nut wad to the side of her mouth and then bites off the piece of mustard seed that has the lime powder on it. As she chews the mixture together, they will form a chemical reaction that will make her teeth and lips red and provide a mild high.
