The you is, the patient, the viewer, the diagnosed, the accused, the citizen, and the disappeared. "You" exposes the subject itself.

I don't think there is one clear cut answer for who is "you." It's because throughout the piece it switches who is "you." It isn't always the reader. #hwa6 #whoisthatyou

The you is a stand-in for the audience of DLMBL; in this case, it creates a sense of immersion and prevents the audience from believing that they are unaffected by the depicted violence #hwa6 #whoisthatyou

#hwa6 #whoisthatyou the "you", to me, is the environment. it that which dictates the "cracks" that the protagonist/author falls through. it represents the overlapping systems of violence that churn out her disturbed and unresolving narrative, product of her un-directable fear, grief, confusion

i think that “you” is the version of me shaped by language and systems, where my voice feels like mine but is also influenced by everything around me. it shows how identity isn’t fully self-made, it’s performed and constructed. #hwa6 #whoisthatyou

Anti-environment was mentioned in our class all the time. So I guess "you" could represent the environment or the social structure that exists there. And the author is questioning, or querying, the unequal social structure. You could be a circumstance, or some ruling authorities.

I think the "you" here is akin to the "self". It is not fixed, but rather constantly shifting under the influence of the surrounding world. Furthermore, this "you" possesses no agency of its own; instead, it is controlled by the system.

#hwa6 #whoisthatyou I'd say the "you" is my perceptual process that mediates between my instincts, innate desires, and immediate thoughts, and my rationale, preservative thoughts (like Id vs Superego I guess). Like for a math question, I'll look at it and come up with an answer quickly, but check it

#hwa6 #whoisthatyou I'm not super clear on this but I think for now i can say that the "you" is not a single person, i think it represents everyone/groups of people. I think this makes sense because we collectively have a lot in common and the usage of you can easily be transferred to everyone

who is you is a good question. for me you is the narrator of everything i do somewhat like a second voice in my head capturing what is happening in the moment as i see it. psychologically, id describe it as my conscious but its also constantly talking without reason #hwa6 #whoisthatyou

#hwa6 #whoisthatyou is “you” the message being conveyed? The underlying reason for why an environment is the way it is

I actually do not know. Perhaps it is the part of everyone that is still vulnerable to influence and guidance... #hwa6 #whoisthatyou

I think she used "you" to bring readers into the scenes, or to imply that they existed as bystanders. #hwa6 #whoisthatyou

I'm not really sure who "you" is? 😓 #hwa6 #whoisthatyou

I have no idea who is that you. #hwa6 #whoisthatyou

I think that you is a generic term that just refers to a person. It is the kind of you that is used in a hypothetical scenario. It is being used to force the reader to think and struggle with what Rankine is saying. #hwa6 #whoisthatyou

#hwa6 #whoisthatyou You is whoever. Its just the person of interest or involvement

I think you are more of a direction. It shows us how to look at a piece, and even when it changes, it forces us to change our perspectives with it. It is almost like a compass, leading us to where we need to be to understand. #hwa6 #whoisthatyou

#hwa6 #whoisthatyou I have 0 clue as to who is that you really is.

I don't think that there's ever going to be a solid answer for who is "you". It is up to interpretation for a reason. #hwa6 #whoisthatyou

What "you" means to me is everyone of the human race, in being spoken to through writing, including the writer themselves. #hwa6 #whoisthatyou

I am not quite sure but I feel like it is something that puts the reader in the driver's seat. but generally I would say you is what tells the reader how to view what's happening. are you what's being performed on or just watching.
March 27, 2026 at 2:10 AM
#hwa6#whoisthatyou that YOU is kinda a like a bridge to different distorted messages. It is sort of contributing to the distortion... I THINK

‘You’ shifts. It gives a level of empathy. When reading “you” the reader imagines themself. When reading “you” they may also equate it to someone external. Someone both of themself yet separate, allowing them to understand this as an experience shared. #hwa6 #whoisthatyou
