A sharp, detailed wildlife photograph of an Atlantic Puffin in breeding plumage. The bird faces slightly upward and to the right. Its beak is large and triangular, striped in vivid orange-red and cream-yellow with small yellow rosette-shaped ornaments at the base. Its eyes are small with bright red orbital rings. The head is black on top, with pale grey-white cheek patches. The chest is fluffy white, and the wings and back are black. The bird sits among dry grasses and twigs. The bokeh background shows blurred teal-blue sky and greenish rock. A watermark reads: Jason P. Odell Photography | jasonodell.substack.com

I haven't posted in quite a few days as I've been down fighting what is probably some kind of viral infection and I'm still dealing with the effects. Here are some birds from last weekend, my contribution to #stunday.

An eastern kingbird perched on a strand of barbed wire fence. Behind the bird is lush, out-of-focus green grass. The kingbird has a nearly black black head and wings. The upper breast and throat are grayish-white with the belly becoming fully white and fluffy. It's tail is black, save for a bright white edge at the end of the tail feathers. The bird is holding some kind of fluffy plant material in its beak. An upland sandpiper, perched on a fence post of a barbed wire fence. The background is completely out of focus grass, transitioning to trees and sky just on the top of the image. The sandpiper is a larger sandpiper with yellow legs. It's belly is tan with brown markings on the outer edge that begin to fill the entire breast starting near the throat. It's back is dark, a mottled pattern of dark and light brown, tan, and white. The bird's lower bill is yellow, becoming brown on the tip, while the upper beak has a yellow line on the edge but is generally brown. It's bill is open and it is calling. A horizontal 16x9 crop of a mourning dove, perched on a strand of barbed wire. The bird is facing away from the camera, but it's head is in profile, looking to the left. The bird is placed slightly to the right of horizontal center, while is centered vertically in the frame. The dove is generally gray, with black, ovular dots along the outer edge of its wing feathers closest to the back. A bright blue ring surrounds the eye, extending towards the bill. The background is out of focus green grass highlighted by dried grasses. A male bobolink perched on a strand of barbed wire between two fence posts. The bobolink is generally black but the back third of its head is pale yellow, divided by a clean, vertical line. The bird is perched in profile, revealing a white bar running down its back from shoulder to tail. The wings are black, but the feather edges are white, making contrasting lines along the edge of the wings. Its feet have long, curved toes, similar a bird of prey, only much smaller.
