How many reasons do you need to love Primroses? My favourite flower.

This beautiful little hoverfly visited the garden today. I did buy a book on hoverflies but promised not to get sucked in, but I had to check this stunner out. I think it's Xanthogramma pedissequum

This Hairy-footed Flower Bee, Anthophora plumipes, is enjoying feeding on the Red Dead Nettle we have left to grow under the perennial kale, where it's been gathering pollen to stock its nest.

The neighbouring box we put up seems to have House Sparrows, so I hope the Swifts don't mind noisy neighbours. #Swifts #WildlifeFriendlyGarden

Sound on for fledgling Swifts! After waiting 4 years and lots of guessing and hoping, one of our nest boxes has been used to rear two chicks who fledged this morning! Until we saw them today we weren't even sure there were chicks, so we're delighted!

I'm so pleased we left a large patch of Red Dead Nettle beneath the kale as it has attracted Moss Carder Bees, Anthidium manicatum. #WildlifeFriendlyGarden #SolitaryBees #Bees #Pollinators

It only takes a little bit of sunshine and warmth to get the pollinators moving. Hoverflies and meat flies are important pollinators, and play vital roles in our ecology.

I thought I saw one yesterday: today I had a chance to see him clearly. A male Early Bumblebee, Bombus pratorum, feeding on the thyme flowers.

Wonderful to find a couple of Lacewings this morning. These used to be common when I was a child, and even 30 years ago they were quite abundant, but now each one I see gives me surprise and joy.

A Buff-tailed Bumblebee, Bombus terrestris, patrolled the garden regularly today visiting every Lungwort in flower, drinking deep and long, gathering masses of pollen. #WildlifeFriendlyGarden

The Cavallo Nero has gone to seed. We will continue to pick leaves and flowers to eat until we need the ground for new crops. Meantime this Common Carder Bee, Bombus pascuorum, seems to be pleased with her share! #WildlifeFriendlyGarden #NoDig #NoChemicals #NoPesticides #Organic #NoInsecticides

Been to the river this morning to do our Riverfly sampling for @dorsetwildlife.bsky.social Pleased to see lots of Cased Caddisflies (shown) as well as great numbers of Flat-bodied and Olives. Large numbers of small, young Bullheads too.

Female Hairy-footed Flower Bee, Anthophora plumipes, about this afternoon. I was too slow to catch her feeding on the Primroses, but she slowed down a little for the Pulmonaria.

Not what I expected to see in our new solitary bee nest provision! I think it might be a male Crossocerus vagabundus, Wandering Boxhead Wasp, but I'd really appreciate any help as my wasp ID skills are very poor.

I've not even finished the new solitary bee nest provision, and it's getting quite a bit of attention!

Well into Bee Fly season. This is Bombilius major, a Dark-edged Bee Fly. I saw a couple mating on the wing today: very strange looking.

First Dark-edged Bee-fly, Bombylius major, of the Spring here. Warmed itself in the sun on that spot for ages.

A Snipe Fly dropped by while I was planting out some beans. I have no idea of its scientific binomial, and I'm trying not to let my brain go chasing an ID, as I'm supposed to be focusing on solitary bees! Maybe someone would care to enlighten me?

Here's a Ruby-tailed Wasp that was hanging around the solitary bee nesting facility. I guess it's probably Chrysis ignita, but no doubt someone will correct me if not.

Common Carder Bee, Bombus pascuorum, has to be one of the prettiest of our bumblebees. They do the lions share of pollination on our tomatoes and other vegetables.
