Today we're off to Harrimere Mill in Barway, a hamlet of Soham. This was a windpump on the junction of Soham Lode and the River Ouse, before it was pulled down in 1917. It was used to drain Soham Mere.

What would really impress me was boreholes on chalk hills, 300-400 feet, in this case a windpump in 1910.

I remember the excitement of getting to see the turbines when we went to Wilson Lake in KS in the 1980s.

Granted, they were significantly smaller than modern turbines. But they were spinning away there 40 years ago.

Also, very consistent with the 1,000 of old wind pumps all over the place

I wasn’t sure I would get to see the Swallowtail butterfly this weekend - the weather hasn’t been great but then this one landed in front of me. Lucky little me 😀🦋❤️ #butterflies @norfolkbutterflies.bsky.social

Windpump is a great word.

Next time I talk to someone Dutch I will suggest this. I bet I will get a direct answer"

Seems like "mill" was favourite branding for big machinery … steel mill, cotton mill, spinning mill, flour mill, wind mill.
Maybe like nowadays everything has to be "AI" 🤷

I wonder why, when windpump is a perfectly good word?

At Wicken Fen today, there was a trail of Easter puzzles and activities for kids. At one point, I was impressed by the ethereal electronic ambient music playing. Some kind of mindfulness aid for the kids? No, just the wind gently vibrating the many metal parts of the windpump.

Horsey Windpump (archive photo), on the Norfolk Broads, was once used to drain the excess water from the low lying land that would otherwise be flooded.
Today a more modem wind pump is used.
