This week is the week of the Winter moth (Operophtera brumata) from @vlinderstichting.bsky.social . During the winter we also monitor the occurrence of these moths. In our nestbox fieldsites we catch and count the numbers of wintermoths as a first measurement in the foodweb of the Great tit (1/3).

A fascinating display by a quirky, chatty, spastic moth. Although my macro camera lens was one of my favorites, the iPhone does a great job.

The numbers of adult wintermoths in winter can give us an first idea of the amount of caterpillars in spring. The caterpillars form the main food source for nestbox breeding passerines in spring. With cans on trees we catch and count both male and female wintermoths. (2/3)
