Incredible woman, beautiful win. Bought her first guitar at 40.
“Outside music, Nagarra helped develop the Walmatjarri dictionary in the 1960s and works to raise awareness about youth suicide and substance abuse, particularly foetal alcohol spectrum disorder, within Aboriginal communities.”

I picked up Wirlmarni I think based on a recommendation from someone on here - Aboriginal blues and country, and winner of the Australian Music Prize, this is such a special album. Like being transported to her home mississippirecords.bandcamp.com/album/wirlma...

This is brilliant. A well deserved win for Kankawa Nagarra 🎶
“I feel that music is a responsibility,” she added. “Caring for nature is a responsibility, and protecting culture is a responsibility for its holistic wellbeing. All these things are connected, and I make it my life’s work.”

A complete change of pace for Day 5 of #PeoplesPop24 - Kurungal Kurungal by the wonderful Walmatjarri Elder, Kankawa Nagarra. She was a worthy winner of the 2024 Australian Music Prize, and a delight to see perform live with Darren Hanlon recently.

La música de los aborígenes de Australia vuelve a engrandecernos como seres humanos. Kankawa Nagara (80 años, aroma a tierra) asoma por las rendijas, dejando atrás al aparatoso Nick Cave y otros activistas de la grandilocuencia.
