In college, I assumed I’d never get lab experience b/c I couldn’t afford not working ($) for a summer.

Then, a classmate explained that NSF REUs paid a stipend & covered housing/travel costs.

My REU experience was literally life-changing.

#WithoutNSF a career in science would’ve been out of reach

I left academia after I got my Ph.D. but my life would not have been the same without #WithoutNSF. It is heartbreaking to see what this administration is doing to destroy our future. They have to be stopped.

I was funded by the NSF Interdisciplinary Graduate Training program (IGERT) at UW-Madison. It connected sociology, ecology, and limnology and trained us to work together on common problems in the real world by DOING RESEARCH together. There is no question that I would not here today #WithoutNSF
My interest in math and science was stimulated by an NSF-funded high school summer program, my PhD dissertation research was supported by an NSF fellowship, and some of my most creative research early in my independent career was supported by an NSF award.

Our papers, device designs, and protocols are used by biotech companies every day. Basic science is not a luxury - federal funding drives the very earliest R&D that powers biotech and trains the next generation of scientists (3/3). #WithoutNSF

#withoutNSF I would not be a scientist. I was awarded an NSF GRFP as a grad student which gave me the time to develop experimental skills.

I have also been awarded several #NSF grants as a faculty member. These have funded the work myself and many students, launching numerous additional careers

Research tells us that where a visitors feel a science museum space is ‘not for them’ they are less likely to seek out the experience. This impacts their interest, engagement, and identification with STEM. Our job is to engage everyone in learning about STEM! #withoutNSF #saveNSF

#WithoutNSF we wouldn’t know the tree of life of dragonflies, which is the basis of projects that 2 past and 1 current postdoc, 4 current PhD students, 4 past PhD students, 1 past MSc student, dozens of undergraduate students, and several high schoolers have worked on in the last decade. #ThankyouNSF

NSF funded my first summer of research and one of my undergrad research labs. I would be a scientist #withoutNSF. NSF also funds (or did before January ) research opportunities for students in my university who are overwhelmingly working class and first gen. NSF keeps science and scientists going.

My career in science would be very different and likely would not even exist #withoutNSF. In particular, an NSF graduate research and later a postdoctoral fellowship were critical to my formative years as a scientist. Now, my CAREER award and two other NSF grants are potentially under threat.

If you're curious why US scientists are so upset about National Science Foundation grant cuts, check out #withoutNSF

Depressing? Yes. Informative? Also yes. To put it succinctly, the US would not be a world leader in science without funding from NSF

#WithoutNSF DDIG, I wouldn't have the UCEs chapter of my dissertation that I defended 8 yrs ago today or the Plethodon paper currently in press at Herp Review. We would know less about southern redback biogeography & the southern zigzags in Tuscaloosa.

#withoutNSF, scientists at all career stages will not have the resources to continue their careers in the US. And worse still, aspiring scientists will not have access to the opportunities, experiences, and support they need to begin theirs.

#withoutNSF, my dream to build an integrative evolutionary ecology research lab in the US and train the next generations of curious scientists and scientifically informed citizens would be out of reach. I, and so many early career scientists like me, would be forced to seek our dreams elsewhere.

#withoutNSF NRT fellowship affording me the funding and time to explore new research areas, I wouldn't have been inspired to pursue my current postdoc synthesizing chemical ecology, evolutionary ecology, and genomics to understand host-microbe mutualisms.

This is one of the absolute best resources out there for science teachers to use to help students visualize and understand scientific processes. It was a godsend during the pandemic when in-person labs were not possible. And it's free for all to use. So disappointing. 🧪🎢 ⚛️ 🥽 🍎 #WithoutNSF #SaveNSF

This makes me so angry. The support available in the USA for STEM education research has led to so many amazing improvements and innovations in how we educate future scientists and the general public. It was an example for other countries to follow. 🎢 🍎 ⚛️👩‍🔬 #WithoutNSF #SaveNSF
🧪 Data update on NSF grant terminations

Including last Friday's terminations, STEM education grants now account for...

54% of terminated NSF grants (751 of 1381)
75% of terminated NSF funding ($590M of $783M)

The next generation of scientists is being targeted.
