Someone reminded me that the Western Maryland Scenic Railway retired steamer 734 10 years ago today.
Never managed to be on a train it drew, but I did photograph it when I was in Cumberland MD after biking there from Pittsburgh in 2014!

I really don’t know why people want the WMSR to get the WM 202. Like, having three steam locomotives and however many diesels would be a huge strain on such a small heritage line. If anything, they should either just fund the cosmetic restoration or move it to the WSMR and keep it on static display.

The only remaining true Western Maryland steam locomotive just got royally screwed out of a proper preservation because the short-sighted morons in Hagerstown didn't want WMSR to have it. They're gonna give it a crappy paint job at best, forget about it, and then let it deteriorate even further.

The Chessie rumor was a red herring. I heard WMSR people say 561 was getting the circus livery when they first acquired it, but I guess they wanted to build hype for the recent rail fest and fake leaked the former. I'm not complaining though!

Like this whole WM 202 stuff for example. If WMSR hadn't just started working on 734, then yeah, go for it. But now it seems kinda pointless because they'll have 1309 back up this year on top of that.

Haven't been to the RRMofPA since 2004, I'd love to go back.

They were NS then NIWX lease units. The WMSR leased 558 and loved it so much, they bought it and the other two.
All of these locomotives are set up to run long hood forward so there’s a little Subbern in them.

I guess it's local pride for them, but I love GE. It's a shame more U-Boats aren't around. I'm glad the WMSR has amassed a fleet of three -8s from NS.

The C&O saved this, a 2-8-4, the now WMSR 1309 together. If the latter can be brought back to steam (it’s issues went far beyond sitting outside in Baltimore), 490 can be run again too.
The questions are 1: would the museum even consider selling it (or a long term lease) and 2: where would it run?

The WMSR used to have a thing where you could ride the train up the mountain with your bike then coast back down on the parallel rail trail. I wish they'd bring it back.
