In general, the words you use in your novel should be as few as are necessary for clarity of meaning. Better choices often require fewer words. Part of your editing is reviewing sentences that seem excessively wordy to see if you missed better words.

When you are on your edit passes you will want to count usage of words, even of the 'be' verb. See what your repetition looks like. Modify and reword to reduce overuse. Go to your dictionary and look up the suspect word and look at its alternatives.
