#work-at-home-moms
Also, men who have traditional, stay-at-home wives treat women in their workplaces extremely unfairly, meaning that the choice to stay home *actively hurts* the choices of women (mothers or no) who want to work... while women who work do not hurt stay at home moms at all!

Moms keep this country running - at home and at work. But they’re still paid less, promoted less, and supported less. On #MomsEqualPayDay, It’s time to close the gap, demand equal pay, and organize - because moms do better in a union.

Tradwives may be having a moment, but as I explain in this AP story, "The stay-at-home moms in this country are disproportionately mothers who’ve been pushed out of the workforce because they don’t make enough to make it work financially to pay for child care."

America’s child care crisis is holding back moms without college degrees
With child care prices high and quality day care hard to find, some moms who lack college degrees say they can’t afford to work.

Medicaid work requirements will hurt a lot of conservative families with stay-at-home moms. ~75% of stay-at-home moms in the US have household incomes <$50K/year. And most were pushed out of paid work because they earned too much to qualify for childcare subsidies but not enough to pay for care.

Am I the only one who remembers "baby-runs-into-Dad's-work-at-home-Zoom" videos as being seen as cute and acceptable, and moms' ones being framed as "irresponsible-ignoring-tbe-baby"? Asking for, you know, friends. :/
When we think of sexism, it's easy to think of *active* efforts to discriminate against women. But sexism also operates *passively* - like through our inaction on issues like childcare and paid family leave. In that context, return-to-office policies are sexist in consequence, even if not in design.
"The labor participation rate for women with children younger than 5 had the biggest midyear drop in more than 40 years during the first six months of 2025."

They want more MOMS at home. And not just because they hate women.

Their *economic* model depends on unpaid labor. And the most effective way to coerce unpaid labor is to create a second class of people and teach them that they're only "naturally" suited for labor they're forced to do for free.

Reading that tradwife-as-stale-trend piece and it has me thinking how my ACTUAL experience as a woman with small kids at home is. How most of the work isn't the cute home stuff.

It's community support stuff because often moms without formal jobs are the only ones who can fill the gaps on the fly

BREAKING: economist discovers “second shift,” a concept coined by sociologists almost 50 years ago; gives it new, stupider, and less explicitly labor-oriented name

Some of us moms in this saga are single, some are married.

Some of us are lower income, some make pretty decent money.

Two work full-time, others part time, I'm basically at-home.

But we are all leaning on each other a little, and also proactively offering help where we can

Conservatives have spent decades pushing the false message that daycare is dangerous. They created a whole satanic panic! And their goal was to guilt moms into staying home full time or diverting energy they could devote to being a boss at work to being a boss of a nanny at home.

It is also used to deny women work that had been stay at home moms and people who may have been incarcerated.

It's a system that enables abusers and refuses to allow people to actually "pull themselves up by their bootstraps."

Conservative Evangelical women I've interviewed often identify as stay-at-home moms despite all their unpaid work supporting their husbands' careers: plumbers' wives doing the books, pastors' wives hosting dinners and Bible studies, etc. So, I'm not surprised that they see no contradiction here.

Right. Jewish stay-at-home moms are very, very rare. Jewish women working has been a long tradition, because often their husbands were busy studying Torah. So they would have to work AND take care of children.
That and if you’re a Christian stay at home mom then it’s something that you can do to have a career that’s it’s okay bc it’s from your home.

I wonder if this is (barely) coded racism, too. My brother used to work at a children’s museum and would often get complaints when preschool/school groups of “loud children” would “disrupt the quiet play” of affluent, usually white stay-at-home moms and their kids during weekdays.

My dad was a guidance counselor in a very upscale NYC commuter town, and he always had to explain to moms that the dads didn't like being home bc at work everyone says "Yes, Sir!" and at home, people are like "Make me."

4. All that poverty chow our moms made when we were kids tastes like home. Make whatever biscuit dough dollar tree concoction you ate when you were six if you want to. It's fine.

5. Cereal does its best work at dinnertime when you're tired.

If they really wanted to incentivize work, they would require married stay-at-home moms to work. The second earner effect is their best chance for a work requirement to influence work at all. There is no first earner impact.
This is just not true. The majority view among researchers at this point is that work requirements do not work. There is a reason they do not cite a single study here.

Waiting for the day I show up at work to be told that women are stay-at-home moms now.

i came home from work and thought for a good 30 seconds my moms dog was passed away at the back door. 😮‍💨 but we good.

But also most moms work! Why does this guy think there's this big centrist middle and working class with stay at home moms...in my experience most people who do that past infancy do it because their wages would all go to childcare

Some of the biggest changes in SNAP in the GOP bill:
-Changing the age of dependents from 18 to 7 years old, which forces parents to work
-Forces states to shoulder 75 percent of cost of administering SNAP
-Raising the age to work for SNAP from 54 to 64.

Parents, your SNAP benefits are at risk – except for stay at home moms
Republicans’ legislation would also force states to shoulder more of the cost for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program

Kara recalled how, before the group, she would ask herself: "Why can’t my life be the way I want it? I could go change the world and I’m stuck here at home!” The moms' group taught her instead: “We are changing the world! With the kids we’re raising. And this is, like, really important work.” 5/

Both Moms are having long, busy work days so I’m at camp Grandpa’s so I don’t have to be home alone all day- or as I call it - I’m babysitting Lewes. Grandpa sent this update, we wore each other out!

a stat that’s stayed with me is working moms with a stay at home husband report doing more domestic work than a single mom working full time and with full custody
One of the things that was common listening to (almost entirely women) give acceptance speeches for winning awards for writing romance novels was how many of them praised their husbands for doing basic household chores.
Once you realize that a lot of men only value their wives in terms of what they do for them or for their children/families, you can't unsee how almost all of the praise from men to their wives has nothing to do with them personally and everything to do with the quality of service.
