Thousands of Canadian federal public servants are transitioning to a four-day workweek in-office policy, but many departments face office space shortages delaying full implementation. The Treasury Board's February directive requires most employees to work three days in-office until adequate space is secured, with managers needing to work four days. Departments like Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, Health Canada, and Global Affairs Canada are struggling with space constraints, particularly in regional offices. Union leaders and MPs are criticizing the policy, arguing it's impractical and costly, while also questioning the government's rationale for reversing remote work trends amid budget cuts. The policy faces legal challenges and public sector labor disputes, with unions claiming it unfairly benefits commercial real estate interests. Despite these issues, the government maintains that renovations will eventually provide needed workspace, though implementation remains staggered across different regions and departments.
