Vote NO on SB457. It is my understanding that SB457 lowers the felony theft threshold. I read about the bill on NELIS (Nevada Electronic Legislative Information System) and noticed, "Section 10 of this bill decreases the felony theft threshold to $750." According to what I read on worldpopulationreview(dot)com, a major concern about "low felony thresholds" is that, "Felony charges have much more effect on a person’s life than misdemeanor charges. Being charged with a felony not only comes with jail time, but it can also affect someone’s ability to rent or buy housing, apply for a job, and vote in elections." The article I read also mentions, "Because the price of goods has increased while the thresholds have stayed the same, many advocates believe that the thresholds should be updated so people do not suffer these extreme consequences for very minor crimes." Again, it is my understanding that SB457 lowers the felony theft threshold. Reading about this bill on NELIS. I am also concerned about Section 39. SB457 "Section 39 of this bill authorizes law enforcement officers with certain training or 5 years of experience to provide hearsay evidence at a preliminary examination under certain circumstances." Who decides the interpretation of "under certain circumstances"? Who decides the credibility of the hearsay? I do believe in justice and letting the punishment fit the crime, but I think SB457 is not a best practice, nor in the best interest of the state of Nevada. I think it would lead to unnecessary increased incarceration rates and state spending. I believe that safety and security are essential, and Nevada needs solutions to address the root causes of crime (such as poverty, underfunded education, and lack of social services). Nevada legislation needs to focus on making the justice system more fair and effective, and I do not think SB457 would help make improvements. Vote NO on SB457. Thank you
