Going to leave it up to people who are less delirious than I am to live-tweet the event over on the #woty2020
November 3, 2024 at 10:26 PM
I have a cold (tested, no covid!), so I'm hunkering down on the sofa with popcorn for @americandialect #woty2020. Fun to be able to attend without travelling!

Four years late! "Doomscrolling" was a #woty2020 (Macquarie and Oxford) www.abc.net.au/news/2020-11...
'Doomscrolling' and 'rona' top Macquarie Dictionary word of the year picks
A year marked by bushfires and the coronavirus pandemic has given us all some new terms, writes Tiger Webb.

And the winner is COVID. It was close 54% for COVID, 46% for 2020. #woty2020

Thank you to everyone! I loved being able to participate this year.

Zoom and Blursday are cut. Unprecedented is added. #woty2020
January 20, 2025 at 2:41 AM
Commenter HATES unprecedented because it's not. It's just a word provosts use or corporations use in marketing material. #woty2020

Lots of arguments pro and con now.
January 20, 2025 at 2:36 AM
Motion (based on chat activity) to replace Blursday with unprecedented.

Motion to replace Zoom- with unprecedented because Zoom- didn't win its own category and it's associated with a corporation.

An argument for COVID because it has affected everything.

An argument for doomscrolling because it's versatile, used for politics, fires, pandemic, but also personal doomscrolling because of how you experience family and friends on Facebook.

An argument for doomscrolling because when people thought things were getting better, they moved to joyscrolling (showing how important/pervasive doomscrolling is).

And argument against 2020 because will 2021 *really* be better?

#woty2020
January 20, 2025 at 2:21 AM
An argument against doomscrolling because it fell off after the election.

People in chat are arguing for adding "unprecedented."

An argument in favor of 2020. It's being used in all kinds of grammatical constructions and used frequently. And it covers things beyond

Argument for COVID because it affected everyone in the world, and it is instantaneously recognized by English speakers and English as a second language speakers everywhere on the planet.

#woty2020
January 20, 2025 at 2:11 AM
An argument against pandemic because it's not new or unique to this year. (Good point.)

#woty2020
January 20, 2025 at 2:06 AM
An argument against all covid words because this year is like 3 horror movies all happening at the same time. (A second on this.)

An argument for doomscrolling because it best describes how we have experienced this year. (Also a second on this.)

Argument that doomscrolling is broader than the pandemic, which may be more representative of the whole year than many of the other words.

January 20, 2025 at 1:56 AM
Great argument that 2020 is versatile and can even be used as an infix. Abso-2020-lutely.

Motion to remove "covidiot" and it is accepted. "Covidiot" is replaced with "COVID."

And the winner of the word that is Most Likely to Succeed is...WE NEED A RUNOFF between antiracism and contactless.

I think "gigafire" will be most likely to succeed because there will definitely be more gigafires, but I don't want to vote for it because it makes me sad. #woty2020

And the winner of Most Useful Word of the Year is Before Times.

January 20, 2025 at 1:16 AM
The vote is on. The winner for the Most Useful Word of the Year is ... apparently a tight three-way race. WE NEED A RUNOFF between Before Times and Blursday (bubble/pod was the close third). #woty2020
January 20, 2025 at 1:11 AM
A strong argument for Before Times. It caught on very quickly, and when you say it people know exactly what you mean. Also, you can talk about After Times (yay!).

Another argument for Before Times because we use it a lot.

An argument for superspreader that it's very relevant to events this year and is easy to understand. An argument against superspreader because it's been used for at least a decade. Same reason against PPE.

Vigorous discussion in the chat too. I can't keep up.
