The Admiralty promptly agreed on condition that Bayard pass the relevant WRNS exams to allow her to be commissioned as a First Officer in the WRNS (Wrens).

Presumably they figured she'd either refuse to do it, fail, or pass - in which case any fallout could be blamed on SOE anyway. /6

Bayard rejoined the ship under the name 'Madeleine Barclay', to protect her relatives.

But not before ABSOLUTE FURY broke out in the senior ranks of the WRNS, where its Director Dame Elvira Sibyl Marie Mathews tried to block the appointment, stating that WRNS officers should not serve in combat /8

According to Airey Neave (working at MI9 at the time, closely with SOE) the WRNS demanded evidence of precedent for such an unusual situation and the Admiralty replied with Lord Nelson and Lady Hamilton.

Director WRNS then pointed out that whatever Lady Hamilton was, she certainly WASN'T a Wren /10

WRNS Director Dame Elvira Sibyl Marie Mathews "reminded" the Navy that WRNS shouldn't serve in combat and refused to let Bayard/Barclay serve on HMS Fidelity.

This was brilliant news for Madeleine. Because: inter-service rivalry!

Now the Royal Navy ABSOLUTELY intended to get her onto that ship /7

Bayard promptly agreed. Yeeted herself to the Royal Naval College at Greenwich, blew through the required courses, then requested her commission as a First Officer on HMS Fidelty.

Confused but somewhat impressed, The Admiralty promptly granted the request.

Fidelity now had a WRNS First Officer. /7

In 1941, WRNS dispatch riders used motorcycles to deliver urgent messages between naval bases, ensuring secure communication during WWII. Riding in all weather and blackout conditions, they played a vital role in wartime logistics, supporting naval operations with speed and reliability

At this point, SOE got involved and demanded what WRNS had against one of their agents, kicking off another round of arguing.

Then suddenly all debate stopped and Bayard was ratified as First Officer.

I presume because someone senior reminded them all there was an EFFING WAR ON and to quit it. /11

Which meant that WRNS First Officer Madeleine Barclay (ne. Madeleine Bayard) got her appointment.

She served bravely and effectively on HMS Fidelity for two years, in multiple combat and covert ops, until the ship was torpedoed by a U-Boat and lost with all hands of the Azores in January 1943 /12

Anyway. the result was that WRNS Lt Cmdr. "Madeleine Barclay" returned to HMS Fidelity where she served with skill and honour in espionage and combat off the coast of France

Sadly, she died in 1943 when HMS Fidelity was surprised and sunk by a U-Boat, with the loss of all hands. /10
