Many first-time dos users experimented with it before moving on to Norton or XTree, and it was rather clunky compared to them, although it did the job overall.

PC Tools was one of the big DOS utility suites competing with Norton Utilities, while also offering file-management features that overlapped with XTree. By the early 1990s it had grown into a huge toolbox: disk repair, undelete, backup, antivirus, compression and more. Did you use it too?

Before Windows Explorer, in 1985, there was XTree. A powerful file manager for DOS that made navigating directories fast and efficient. Many still remember it as the gold standard for managing files in the 80s and early 90s. This is the Gold version from 1989. Shot from my studio

We were soundly an XTree household because of my stepdad but my his brother was committed to Norton Commander and it was like a opening a portal to another world whenever we visited him.
This is Norton Commander Gold, that I used extensively until Windows 95 came out.
I still remember some of its shortcuts. Keyboard-driven, endlessly efficient, pure productivity.
