Belated spooky season news!
My reflection on Rebecca Copeland and Linda Ehrlich's 'Yamamba: In Search of the Japanese Mountain Witch' was published in Twisted Ink. I had so much fun writing something a bit more personal and creative about a collection that resonated with me so much. Read below!

Japan's closest equivalent to a bog witch is the Yamauba (or Yamamba), a wild crone of the wilderness who shares many archetypal traits with the Western swamp or forest hag.

Who remembers when there was free pick-up basketball courts at Akihabara? This guy! 500 series Shinkansen were cool. Finally, my favorite arcade: Shibuya's Game Kaikan with 50 yen Super Turbo. I spent way too much time here that summer.

!["their yamamba dance, meet the real yamamba (shite or lead actor) on the mountain. She describes herself to them as being “with birthplace unknown, lodgings uncertain” who, “dragging good and evil [with her], makes her mountain rounds.” Baba Akiko considers yamauba legends representative of the downfall of the kunitsukami (deities of the land). Popular during the medieval period, the Noh play Yamamba is shrouded by overlapping religious and philosophical subtexts such as “the good and evil are not two; right and wrong are the same” (Brazell 207). The core concept of the Noh Yamamba is the transcendental philosophy of non-dualism epitomized in the Heart Sutra (Hannya shinkyō), perhaps the best-known Wisdom literature of Buddhism. From the point of view of the statement that “form is nothing other than emptiness, emptiness is nothing other than form” (shikisoku zekū, kūsoku zeshiki), the existence of Buddhas, human beings and/or yamauba is miniscule within the vastness of time and space. This yamauba is a seeker of enlightenment, and would wander the mountains until her delusions ceased to exist, in order to escape the wheels of painful rebirth."](https://cdn.bsky.app/img/feed_thumbnail/plain/did:plc:x5ba2cm5nwrmkwkdhsbdfoay/bafkreiec2a6hjxpuqmtkhe3pv453bzxzsrjruiz33nriqw6j2lf5gv7ude)

Maybe he's just trying kind of Japanese #yamamba style or what was that California Barbie style called?
However alittle late and failing horribly (or as he would say: big).

Things I love lately and always: my cat (you will be subjected to many photos), architectural thwarting in the Sims, literature in translation, paintings that only sometimes make me cry, iced lattes, fingerless skeleton gloves, Goldberg Variations, Yamamba from Noh plays, duvets.

If I am having a Yamamba autumn, in some versions of the story, that would mean my son, Tuft, is having a Kintarō autumn. It does fit!

Okay, back in Yamamba mode, but instead of eating samurai, it’s RETVRN bros. I lure them into the mountains with a subtly inaccurate Corinthian column, do an obscenely antiquarian dance in my shroud of many pashminas, then pounce. Nom nom.
