(Ybart is less happy, and so is she herself)
“Why haven't we left yet?” “I have to give our informant his copperlings first, and then we can leave to bring her to the boss. He probably says that we have to go to Pata-Angra, and we will wait there until someone from headquarters comes to pick up these two.' “The headquarters?” 'Apparently the Grand Magister himself wants to collect her in person. She’s valuable. I expect not only the big reward, but also a promotion for our entire team. Congratulations in advance' Ybart heard steps moving toward the inn door, and the men holding him and Zabelle under the threat of the crossbows began talking among themselves. “With that reward I can finally buy a new sword, what about you?” 'I have to buy some new furniture at home. And riding equipment. And books for the children.' Ybart had to listen to it passively and his thoughts wandered in all directions again. Apparently there was a seriously high price on her head, which would be shared by the entire gang, and their so-called informant. Was that Steef, or the innkeeper himself? The Kerbor knights must have mobilized their informants much earlier, and promised them a large sum.

Every story has a completely different approach to religion. In ANOD (scifi dystopia) there is a monotheist post-Christian and very patriarchal religion that isn't coherent enough to make sense according to Michael.
Ansifer (low fantasy) has a pluralist polytheism but Ybart 1/2

An interesting question for #FantasyIndiesMarch: are my characters introverted or extroverted? Well, as an introvert myself most of the characters I identify with most are introverts (Liana, Ybart, Michael) or at least ambivert (hey Eliza, I suppose...) because that's what comes out more naturally..

Are you now also condemning me to loneliness too, Ybart Nembo? Am I really doomed?” He stared at her for a moment in the silence of the night, weighing his words, but it took a long time before an answer came. 'No, no, no, it's not. You're explaining it wrong. Not at all what I mean. I just don't want to use you, I can't take advantage of..." She put her hand back on his knee. 'This isn't about you or your principles, Ybart, I'm talking about me here. Please see that. I'm not just some temptation you have to resist for your high ideals of respect and all that. Not an evil that you must resist for your spiritual perfection. I am a person. A small lonely person who grew up without much love or friendship, with people for whom dominance and manipulation are all that can be achieved. For a moment I was in another world thanks to you, while I was still myself without any masks. For a moment I believed that things could be different. Maybe I couldn't quite convince myself that it could really be permanent, but it was real, for a moment. And then this. I don't even know anything anymore now.' She didn't wait for an answer, but ducked into the tent, put on her sleeping tunic, and crawled into her sleeping bag, facing away from him. He sat outside for a long time without doing anything before finally did the same thing too. Neither of them slept well that night, but no word was spoken between them until breakfast.

Ybart has saved lady Zabelle Ansifer from being trafficked in a sort of coffin-like box as a hostage, which comes back in her nightmares sometimes, and leads to this tropey little scene...
That night there was a full moon over the heath. There were crickets they had never heard before, and the strange ghostly sound of the pale nightjar in the distance. Still, they fell asleep quickly, each on their own side of the tent. The walking had been tough again, although Zabelle's muscles had recovered reasonably well by now. In the middle of the night, Ybart woke up from a scream. “No, lemmego!”. After several seconds of half-asleep confusion about where he was and what was going on, he found his alchemical light, turned it on, and searched for the attacker. But all he saw was Zabelle, tossing and turning in her sleep. She shouted that strangers had to let her go and that she did not want to go back in the coffin. He leaned toward her and grabbed her shoulder to wake her up. “Zabelle, wake up, you're dreaming!” The effect was not what he expected: she grabbed him in her arms and hugged him like a body hug pillow. “Lady Zabelle, this is not in our contract,” he muttered, and then she finally opened her eyes. 'Ybart? What on Earth are you doing?' Her grip loosened so she could look into his eyes in the soft light of his lamp. "Protecting you from attackers that only exist in your dreams or something like that, you screamed the whole forest together with your nightmare. And then you grabbed me.” She looked away, let go of him completely and sat down. “Ah, oops…”

It seems like Ybart has a bit of a personal rule of 'always clean up your room if you will have a female visitor', which is not possible if you accidentally save a girl locked up in a box while doing your late shift...
He's often apologetic anyway
An eventful half hour later, Ybart and the mysterious young woman were sitting in his small student room. He looked around a little apologetically at the contents of his room. 'I'm sorry, if I had known I would have a female visitor I would have cleaned up,' he mumbled as he turned on the light. She smiled slightly. "I look like a slave from the salt mines of Alzalia who has walked through three dumps, and you're apologizing about a few books and a shirt lying around?" He sat down tiredly next to her. "OK, OK, I'll give you something to drink and then you tell your story and then we'll go to the city guards." She looked at him fearfully at that suggestion: "No! No city guards, the Kerbor knights are everywhere." Ybart looked at her in surprise. The order of Kerbor knights indeed provided guards of all kinds as well as toll officials. They had some sort of communications network all over Anka of which no one really knew how it worked, and they were virtually everywhere. Avoiding an organization like the Kerbor was difficult. If they were really after her she had a serious problem.

The first Ansifer family member Ybart meets when arriving in the castle is Zabelle's little brother Gergo. He follows a rather dark religion, which doesn't really stop him from being judgemental.
Ybart saw his expression change, and for a moment he even seemed concerned, and he even reached out a hand to Ybart. 'Thank you for saving my sister anyway, alchemist, but if I were you I would run away as quickly as you can, after you've had your bath at least. We Ansifera are incapable of doing good, and incapable of relationships or friendships. Our genes have been selected through centuries of manipulation and schemes, and our upbringing from birth only makes it worse. Competition, looking down on everyone, using everyone and seeing that you yourself are not being used. You just can't become human like that. We can only accept that there is nothing for us to desire. Only the emptiness of nothingness can bring us enlightenment, only non-existence can bring us salvation. And it would be better if we had never existed…” His voice became higher, like some kind of priest. Ybart wanted to say something back, but he didn't get the chance, because Zabelle pulled him away. "Come on, we'll be gone before he starts explaining the whole doctrine of the primacy of non-existence and proclaim that we should all commit suicide, I don't have the energy for that right now." “What's the plan?” “If there's no one else in our way, we'll go to the baths now, and I'll pick out some clothes for us and then show you the important parts of the castle, and my, uh, our room.” Gergo coughed as if to say 'caught' and turned away to continue whatever he was doing.

On the way to the kitchen he almost bumped into Penda again, still in her striking dress but now with a lot more make-up, although Ybart was not convinced that she was really that much prettier than before. 'You again? And, did you find her?' 'Yep. Nothing dramatic going on. Lisbet Darsi's world is more interesting than real people today. I think she still has a lot to process. It’s a good quiet place to study there by the way. I’m looking for a carafe of wineberry lemonade, and I’m going to install myself there too with my alchemy books. If anyone is looking for one of us...' “I'm out, sorry honey. Party time for Lady Penda. Not everyone has a pet at home like you to play with, some of us prefer to go out hunting…' She winked again and started walking again. “Just make sure you are safe, Lady Penda.” She turned again and blew him a kiss. "It's nice that you're concerned, little alchemist, but I'm the most powerful woman in this country, and no one will even lay a finger on me without my consent. So let go of your silly worries and go have some lemonade in the tower garden with my sister and two books or something. That is so typically you two that it is endearing...' He stood there for a moment and then proceeded on his quest to get a carafe and lemonade.

Only angry silence came from the direction of the pillow. “Please say something, Ybart. Anything.” Finally, after a painfully long time for her, he straightened up, threw the pillow away and said 'something, anything', and then looked at her with irritation for a long time. ‘Ybart?’ “Lady Ansifer, may I make something clear?” She nodded submissively. 'I know I'm just a poor student, but I still want to be able to make my own life choices, and I also want to be able to choose what I do with my feelings. And I like to know when I'm starting a relationship and all that.” She sat a little closer. “And now I want my tentmate and boss back to discuss a few matters.” “Uh, okay, I'm listening.” She said, nibbling nervously on her pinky nail. “First, let's talk about this trip. I'm supposed to get you to Anka City, and I want to be able to do that without too much drama, at least until we arrive. I'll just assume that you're right that it's easier to complete my assignment under the cover of an official partner, so I'm not going to protest that now, it's apparently too late anyway.' She nodded slightly and then looked regretfully at her too-short nail. 'And I realize that today I'm going to have to act normal and play my role in some way now. But I don't know, Zabelle. Don't know.' 'What do you mean' “Us, of course. Apparently I'm your partner now.” She rubbed her now painful little finger. “Ah… I see.”

Normally I'm always on my guard. But now I was at ease, and I felt safe, with you I mean. You put me at ease.” “There's a nation-wide organization of corrupt knights after you who use an unknown method of fast communication and have infiltrators everywhere, and you feel safe enough to drink like a naive college student in the first month of college just because I make you feel comfortable? Are you serious now? You are very lucky, Lady Zabelle.” She protested. 'Hey, my discernment about you was still correct, or do you want to contradict me there? You have even protected me from myself. You would make a good knight-monk in the order of Respect for Life indeed. If I could I would vouch for you myself. But can I ever look myself in the eye again? He shrugged. 'Technically that's not possible, but in practice people who can afford it usually just use a well-polished silver mirror like the one in your backpack. There are also occult techniques that allow your soul to leave the body with which you can try to look at your own face from outside of it, which I would not recommend. In the improbable case that it would works, it might be rather dangerous. And if you want an even simpler method, Lady Zabelle, just look at a newspaper photogram of yourself. Those certainly don't look away. We had one in the kitchen…' She started laughing. “Thank you, little alchemist.” 'Then forget it now. In the end, nothing really went wrong. "Do the highborn have a special religion?" Ybart finally asked to start a conversation again? 'Hmm, no, we're just supposed to be present at all kinds of ceremonies sometimes, at different temples. But I guess other than a home shrine to Nomma, the goddess of power, money and personal ambition, there isn't much religion in our family. Not that anyone really believes in it or invests in it. But I sometimes go to the Temple of Respect for Life for the liturgy. I love the old music and there’s something interesting about their ideals. They are the opposite of everything I have ever knew, and of how high-born people live, especially the Ansifer family, except perhaps my great-grandmother. It helps me to remember that another way of life is possible, even if you were born as Lady Zabelle Ansifer herself.” “Ah, that's why you already knew so much about it.” 'Broad education for the high families, right? And of course we go every two years to the temple of Aluna, goddess of happiness. My sister is a big fan.” He nodded, but had never been to her temple himself, which was strictly reserved for the high families.
