I think Adler works better as The Stranger rather than The King in Yellow himself. He is the Herald of the King, the bearer of The Yellow Sign, but is not on the level of cosmic importance. He is the one who destroys Yhtill, the decadent empire, during the masquerade, by revealing he wears no mask.
