So true. I'm begging Maoists to read Yiching Wu's “The Cultural Revolution at the Margins”

The Yiching Wu book on the Cultural Revolution is so gripping. I can't put it down. Will probably be my go-to recommendation for what to read to get the lay of the land on the GPCR.

you might enjoy Yiching Wu's book The Cultural Revolution at the Margins for a newer account that does great bottom-up work on the subject

A lot of primary sources and state archives from the Cultural Revolution era were declassified in the 90s and early 2000s. Yiching Wu's book draws from those sources, and engaged with earlier scholarship like the Ley book.

In Yiching Wu’s words: “'class' here... the various ways in which #marginalization, #disempowerment, #domination are created & maintained and to the discursive configurations that give meanings to fragmented social conditions...as historically mediated and discursively mobilized."

Also because class, as EP Thompson pointed out, isn’t a fixed structure but historical category of relative power positions. Yiching Wu’s further elaboration in The Cultural Revolution at the Margins explained everything everyone wanted to ask abt China’s post-revolution, “post-socialist” 👻“changes”
‘A Marxist class analysis was almost the worst one to apply to a post-revolutionary society. Because what happens in a revolution following a major war? There's been an upheaval. Everybody's not where they were.’

Begging Maoists to read Yiching Wu's The Cultural Revolution at the Margins to learn how the party-state used carcerality to suppress communist movements in China during the Cultural Revolution.
