Book Review: “Blue Moons” by Saint Yvon
Rating: ★★★★★ (5/5) Find Blue Moon on Amazon Version 1.0.0 Blue Moons by Saint Yvon is an ambitious, emotionally charged crime thriller that takes a seemingly ordinary man and steadily pushes him across lines he once believed he would never cross. At its center is Jason Bell, a talented but overlooked IT professional, a devoted father, and a man already carrying the weight of childhood trauma, a failed marriage, career frustration, and his young son’s cancer diagnosis. What begins as a story about desperation gradually expands into a tense examination of money, healthcare, technology, crime, and the stories people tell themselves to justify the choices they make.

We are watching Simon Reeve again and he’s in the Yukon. Which puts me in mind of the cartoon Yvon of the Yukon. Which I swear was some sort of fever dream.

Everything is feeling like a perpetual motion machine, where people expect that machine will keep running while they take stuff out without putting anything back in, and no.

[Good news for wild #salmon update]

Iceland shelved its #aquaculture reform bill today: www.salmonbusiness.com/iceland-shel...

I published this op-ed by @patagonia.com founder Yvon Chouinard to @mongabay.com this spring in which he laid out all the reasons why this is the right move:
Iceland must protect wild salmon and reject new aquaculture legislation (commentary)
In a little more than 50 years, the population of wild North Atlantic salmon has plummeted by 75%. Today, it is estimated that fewer than 60,000 exist in and around Iceland. Unless we do something soo...

I laughed so hard when I read Lorraine Daston on faculty meetings. I sometimes feel that the most useful thing one can do to bring about organizational change is to make meetings suck less so that people talk to each other.

You've given me the perfect opportunity to share the quote I spent an hour trying to find yesterday. It's from Lorraine Daston's "The History of Science and the History of Knowledge".

Saving this version of popularity to think about alongside markets and machine learning. More and more, I think there's something about how many people think about large complex systems more less the way they think about the weather.

"Silicon Valley created a new, worse version of popularity that everyone just accepted at face value at some point between 2019-2023."

The Garbage Day newsletter is talking here about pop music, but I'm gonna hold onto this and apply it everywhere.
