Our target is to conclude at least 300 cases by the end of this exercise.” Justice Zeija named the nine participating courts as: the Court of Appeal, Commercial Division, Family Division, Mukono High Court, Fort Portal High Court, Mengo Chief Magistrate’s Court, Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court, Nabweru Chief Magistrate’s Court, and Fort Portal Chief Magistrate’s Court. He further revealed that a team of retired judges, including his predecessor Justice Richard Buteera, will lead the mediation effort. The Acting Registrar of the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) division, Ms Zulaika Nanteza, confirmed that about 15 retired judges will be handling the mediation process. She named some of them as Justices Paul Mugamba, Augustine Nshimye, and retired Principal Judge Yorokamu Bamwine. It is one of several alternative dispute resolution (ADR) mechanisms that can be applied either before or during court proceedings. The mediator facilitates dialogue and negotiation to help parties find common ground. Speaking on the importance of mediation, Court of Appeal Justice Geoffrey Kiryabwire encouraged litigants to continue communicating and, where possible, settle disputes amicably through mediation. “You were talking when you got into the dispute say over selling land and now that the buyer has defaulted for one reason or another, you stop talking,” he said. “The problem has been that once you enter the court system, communication stops, and you escalate the matter from the Magistrate’s Court to the High Court, then the Court of Appeal and eventually, because you're no longer talking, it ends up at the Supreme Court.” He added: “What we’re telling people is that talking can continue even within the court process. People shouldn’t get too angry and say, ‘I will not settle until I’ve gone through all the courts in Uganda.’ Only the rich can afford that.
