It actually triggers the fuck out of me when people say Botw is a 'sequel to zelda1' or 'modernized zelda1'
its just obviously not true, did u play it?? they have no notable similarities besides the main cast. Its closer to a Assassins Creed successor then Zelda 1.

I still can't program a simple top-down zelda1-like movement without looking up a guide *dies*

The art from this 1994 #zelda guide, for the re-release of Zelda1, has the cutest little fairy.
The guide this is in archive.org/details/guid... is a remake of the 1986 one I just finished. Some of the art was redrawn and some is the exact same illustrations.

Zelda1 throws you in the dark and requires you to make inferences and interpret riddles and make guesses to progress. the most you get in terms of direction is often just "THERE ARE SECRETS WHERE FAIRIES DON'T LIVE" "DIGDOGGER HATES A CERTAIN KIND OF SOUND"

where Zelda1 allows you to ignore the sword cave, trusting YOU to seek out & understand its value, botw requires you to go to the one specific shieka tower before you are trusted to do the shrines, then requires 4 specific shrines before it trusts you with the rest of the game

There is also an interview with Miyamoto where he explains what it is too. That it was always meant to be a dungeon replacement similar to Zelda1's second quest. A way to keep people playing the game while they worked on the next game.
