But extremists always want you to pick sides, to show your colours, to swear allegiance to their cause or else label you to be of the other extreme.

Spot-on. Europe is strewn with the bodies of centre-right parties who decided that the best way of countering the rise of the far right was to adopt some of their rhetoric and policies. Not that the Tories here would dream of making the same mistake, of course.

Side note: This is not only another very bad result for the CDU, but for the centre-right in general. The FDP doesn't even factor anymore. 1% in MV and likely no more than 2-3% in Berlin. Looks like the populist rebirth of the Free Democrats isn't quite going to plan.

Of course they are necessary and probably don't go far enough but what Merz had said implied that it was simply the slow reforms that are the cause of the election results.
I don't think they have properly communicated the reality to voters and the AFD have painted an alternative attractive one.

There is a bit more to it, not least that Canada has only one contigous neighbour. Many EU members have to ratify CETA -Ireland hasn't - and then we will see.
It is striking how many in the UK are commenting. Could there be a bit of envy going on?

He really doesn't get it. They didn't lose votes because they haven't pushed through the 'reforms'. They lost because the fail to address in a meaningful way the concerns of many, which requires clear communications rather than nods towards far right agendas.

Not much was expected of the CDU in MeckPom but only just .aking the 5% hurdle is very poor.
The problem is that they don't understand what they are doing wrong and Merz is the wrong person entirely.
