Turkey Vultures (Cathartes aura)

With a lifespan of up to 40 years, Turkey Vultures mate for life.

The scientific name "Cathartes aura" translates from Greek to "cleansing breeze". Their stomach acid has a lower pH than battery acid, allowing them to eat carcasses tainted with anthrax and rabies.

Jumping Spider

Previously found only in vertebrates, jumping spiders possess the cognitive ability to tell the difference between biologically-based motion such as human movement, and non-biologically based motion such as an inanimate object being moved by wind (De Agrò et al., PLOS Biol., 2021).

It is believed that Chief Oshawanoe retrieved Tecumseh’s remains hidden near the battlefield and placed them on St. Anne Island. Chief Joseph White, his stepson Silas Shobway, and the Walpole Island Soldiers Club cared for Tecumseh’s bones through the generations. Overlooking the lands and the waters of Bkejwanong Territory, Tecumseh’s remains were placed in this cairn on August 25 th , 1941. This final resting place was rededicated on October 2, 2013 in honour of the bicentennial of the War of 1812. Tecumseh’s spirit, his memory, and his legacy live on today. I used this story as a launching point of historical reference around which I built the composition. The contours of the base are the Maryland/Delaware Peninsula where Harriet was originally enslaved and to which she frequently returned for her freedom raids. The dramatic ledge represents the Mason-Dixon line into free Pennsylvania, an important milestone in the journey to freedom. Harriet is leaning into the wind with her shoulder; eyes cut formidably up, bracing herself against the elements. The wind illustrates the peril of the journey and serves as a metaphor for the intense opposition she faced. Harriet's dress is protectively enveloping the girl. Her skirt, billowing like a flag, signifies the legal protections afforded to every United States citizen and a symbol of the future equality to come. Each hand on the sculpture expresses an attribute: Determination, Protection, Fear, and Trust. With a look of trepidation, the child is leaning out to get a better sense of what lies ahead. She holds Harriet's finger affectionately, her cautious hope echoed in her delicate grip. The child is off-balance and tentatively taking a step forward, her foot precariously close to the edge of the cliff.
