What problem, exactly, does the Government think raising public transport fares is solving?

Seems like greyhound racing did well: sadly can't say the same for climate action.

why, indeed, would we promote alternatives to fossil-fuelled private cars during a polycrisis? @aislinnkellyy.bsky.social shines a light on the Irish government's priorities.

Here's the liquid gas industry framing its product as a "just transition".

This would be sidesplittingly funny if it was not apparent that this message is getting through to politicians.

Meanwhile public transport users are facing fare increases of 15%-50%+ in some cases over a 12 month period 😣

New substack on things from old Ireland I think we should bring back.
My case for bringing back several things modern life has foolishly discarded: dolmens, fires, holy wells, banshees and a healthy fear of cutting down the wrong hawthorn.

I spent an afternoon thinking about Arthur Griffith, Ireland’s first head of government, and whether his fierce belief in national self-determination might tell us something about how we imagine environmental change now.

E-scooters already require lights and reflectors.

Dressing riders like construction workers won’t fix bad road design, dangerous junctions or high speeds.

How many hi-vis vests do we need before we admit the roads are the problem?

"Future motorists are accommodated quite generously in our imagination, while rail is repeatedly asked to prove that the passengers already exist."

This sums up the government's mindset when it comes to transport.

Growing up in rural Tipperary, I know the car is not going anywhere, nor should it. What I want is something much less dramatic: an Ireland where having a car is useful, but living without one is possible.

Agricultural emissions rose 0.5% in Q1, driven partly by synthetic fertiliser use.

Meanwhile, huge political energy goes into defending the nitrates derogation.

Irish agricultural policy feels increasingly unmoored.

Where are we trying to go?

Why is investment in roads treated as urgent, while investment in rail is treated as ambitious?

We build roads in response to growth, then ask rail to prove the growth exists first.

We’ve got that completely backwards.

Once, after booking somebody to discuss the All-Island Strategic Rail Review, I was asked to find somebody who “disagreed with trains” for balance.

My soul left my body.

It is the appearance of debate without the substance of it, and I think that distinction matters.
