It's not often that I find myself on the same side as the US Copyright Office. In fact, I think this is the first time in 25 years that I've found myself cheering on the office's official actions as good for art *and* good for free expression, taking the side of creative workers over our bosses.

I have a bit of time now.

So my home was a no-screens home when there was really just one screen you could have. We had a TV—it was in my parents' bedroom, connected to the VCR. If I was sick I could watch re-runs there; we watched the Olympics in Olympics years. Sometimes a movie from the library
It’s a long story and I don’t have time to tell it right, but there would never have been any Star Trek in my childhood home at all if the one night I convinced my parents to give it a try hadn’t been “Darmok”

Same. There was something that felt really radical about having a TV hero whose superpower was not just intelligence but thoughtfulness, and a kind of moral seriousness. Who showed from that first episode that you “win” by seeking to understand what seems like a threat.
I am so glad to have learned about the integrity of leadership from Patrick Stewart as a kid watching TNG. "What would Picard do?" feels like a fair guiding question.

Thank you, Patrick, for everything.

Rest in peace, our Captain. Like many people, my true entree into Trek was with Patrick Stewart at the helm of the Enterprise. Life changing for me and so many. I am grateful. And I am sad.

I have had a version of that email from all kinds of firms and orgs. It just struck me that a family-owned summer camp had to communicate this to customers, something so far under the hood. not sure there ever happened before.

I’m a part of a small consulting group that works with organizations to end sexual violence.

Our website gets zero clicks from Google now. We’ve had serious conversations about pulling it offline because no one sees it.

We no longer get any clients we don’t know personally.
A summer camp sent an email this morning. They outline how Gen AI search has killed their marketing reach. They’re asking families to host info sessions in our homes.

When a business cannot connect with people looking for it, what’s the search business model again?
