Took a little detour in my chronicle of the 1996 season to discuss some baseball cards photographed by Randy Johnson.

Never thought I'd write about baseball cards because I haven't been all that into them, but life takes many strange twists and turns, and I couldn't resist these!
1996 Seattle Mariners Interstitial: Baseball Cards Photographed by Randy Johnson
Photography was always a hobby of Randy Johnson’s. He used his time nursing a back injury in 1996 to photograph a set of incredible baseball cards

It’s 38 degrees and my child is outside wearing shorts and riding his bike, happy as can be.

Been sleeping like a baby lately. You know, getting very excited if I sleep through the night.

I feel like I keep hearing about The Witches of Eastwick and thought I’d read it. Not sure what I expected from a book written by a dude in 1984, but holy “men writing women“. Noped out after about 20 pages.

I survived 4 1/2 days of solo parenting with covid and I’m so glad tomorrow is a day off from everything because I need a day to get my shit together! What a week.

Getting unsick means I got to take the kids to a birthday party and a play place and it is intense. Club songs from the early 2000s and strobe lights. But it isn’t even noon! I feel like I’m a little drunk 😂

I haven’t straightened my hair in 7 or 8 months and holy moly, I did not expect it to be this long! I feel like Rapunzel.

Feeling completely normal and getting a negative covid test? It’s a Sunday miracle! Seems really fast, but I’m not going to complain!

8 year old is thrilled that the Guardians, his pick to win it all, won. It’s adorbs.

I’m seeing a lot of people posting about their covid/flu vaccine side effects and I’m jealous of all of you! We had appointments to get them on Monday (I’m a fun mom on no school days 😂) but alas. Would much rather have side effects than the whole dumb thing.

11 year old is telling me that a lot of her friends have seen Scream?? Look, I don’t want to judge anyone’s parenting, but *I* can’t handle Scream! I’m also a big scaredy cat about scary movies...

Time to introduce the children to Hocus Pocus. So excited!

I’ve been wanting to write about the baseball connection to the 1962 Columbus Day Storm for years. But I sat at my desk to try to work on it and I can’t be expected to sit upright at a time like this. So it will be delayed once again. But it’s cool and weather-y and someday I’ll write it!

It really sucks to be sick when your husband is traveling because there’s no one in your house to whine to about wanting soup from the Met Market who can go get it for you. These kids keep telling me it’s illegal for them to drive to the store?? I thought this was America.

Tonight before bed my 11 year told me, in response to me telling her that I knew a lot of things and was very smart:

"You've been on this planet for over 40 years. You're kind of a legend."

And I am choosing to believe she was being 100% sincere and not at all sarcastic about it 😂

The White Sox are gonna tie it and this game is going to last 5 more hours.

It must be a lot of pressure when you know The Pope is watching you and judging you.

I'm just rooting for baseball here, everyone.

One of my favorite baseball things is when they show guys getting beaned on their bums in slow motion. It's just so funny every time.

I hadn't come across this article in my searches about the Randy Johnson baseball cards and I'm dying!!

HI, I'M RANDY JOHNSON, CAN WE BORROW A FISH!!!!

Incredible.

Well I guess livestreaming a firing squad execution is simply the modern version of stoning someone in the town square? Imagine if we opted, as a society, to become better instead rolling around in the same old muck.

Imagine that you're just casually staying at the Doubletree Hotel in Anaheim and go to hang out in the hotel pool and there's Randy Johnson, doing water aerobics 😂

(You probably wouldn't really notice Chris Bosio, who just looked like a dude. Sorry to Chris Bosio.)

I love this installment, as usual! The chunks of context about A-Rod and about the advent of Japanese players in MLB are especially interesting
The 1996 Mariners fight through more obstacles as they wrap up the first half. Russ Davis breaks his leg, Ken Griffey Jr. breaks his hamate bone, Bobby Ayala returns, Alex Rodriguez graces the cover of Sports Illustrated, and the Mariners manage to stay in the race despite it all.
The 1996 Seattle Mariners: Part 4
The Mariners limp into June and find more injuries. Amidst All-Star voting and trade rumors, the team fights to stay the course.

Amanda literally worked herself sick on this so the least I can do is repost. (This also has more Tim Harikkala content than anything I have ever read, save for Mr. Harikkala’s @baseball-reference.com page.)

11 year old is also home sick today, as is her best friend. So they're playing Minecraft and talking on the phone on speaker. The phone etiquette of these kids is wild!! So is their texting etiquette, tbh. I suppose they'll either figure it out as they get older, or this is the new way.
