I spent 4 terms in local gov focused on climate action, reconciliation, social justice & a stronger democracy. I left in 2018 to figure out why Trump got elected. Now I teach power literacy & help courageous people take action on bold, progressive ideas.
Episode 2 of the @beyondaballot Vancouver Votes podcast with @segalrs and @jodyvance is live. Is it hard to keep a straight face when you’re talking about elections and suddenly a Dalmatian takes centre stage? Yes, yes it is. #Vanpoli #BCpoli

A big part of the authoritarian playbook is war. War takes over the news. War blots out criticism. War divides a nation’s people, subjecting those against it to being called unpatriotic. War grants leaders all sorts of emergency powers. War consumes everything else.

We mustn’t let this war do so.

This is bonkers. It’s hard to imagine the context for a government to be too busy to deal with a well-organized and efficient structure for connecting with community in order to make better decisions than you would otherwise make because you’re too busy to deal with community in less efficient ways.
Today, the City of Vancouver released a staff report recommending the dissolution of 10 of 11 Type A Civic Committees because, and I'm paraphrasing, staff are too busy to deal with them.
