Where geology is visible.
Long ago, when this was ancient seabed, lava seams broke through earth eventually becoming dark rock, on left, and in horizontal line on right. The lava seams, part of volcanic cones that became mountains.
Animal homes in the heavy clay, visible, too.

A silver lining of drought? When lake levels fell, the geology of this region became more visible. The photo shows a thick mound/line of dark shiny rock going down to water's edge. That is lava rock. There is also a thinner line of the same emerging through center right. The rest is clay and small rocks scattered all around. Above the seam on right, a few holes in darker, heavier clay where ground squirrels have made their home. They know what they're doing, they chose the heaviest clay sitting above volcanic rock, the sturdiest spot for their homes...

Inside a redwood fairy ring.
When a redwood dies and new trees, its babies, grow up at the former tree's perimeter. The root system can survive for 1000s of years this way.
