my article on George Herbert and trans studies is out in Renaissance Quarterly. It's really only about one poem, but it is THE poem you're thinking of, so you should check it out --

Apparently, Trump created “Transgender For Eveyone” in the past few weeks, which I think is what @badinfinity2.bsky.social has been lobbying for all along, so I guess we’re done here. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Trump: “I am withdrawing my support and Endorsement of ‘Congresswoman’ Marjorie Taylor Greene…”
Donald J. Trump -+ @realDonaldTrump I am withdrawing my support and Endorsement of "Congresswoman” Marjorie Taylor Greene, of the Great State of Georgia. Over the past few weeks, despite my creating Record Achievements for our Country including, a Total and Complete Victory on the Shutdown, Closed Borders, Low Taxes, No Men in Women's Sports or Transgender for Everyone, ending DEI, stopping Biden's Record Setting Inflation, Biggest Regulation Cuts in History, stopping EIGHT WARS, rebuilding our Military, being RESPECTED by every Country in the World (as opposed to being the laughingstock that we were just 12 months ago!), having Trillions of Dollars (Record Setting!) INVESTED in the U.S.A., having created the "HOTTEST" Country anywhere in the World from being a DEAD Country just 12 months ago (and so much more!), all I see "Wacky” Marjorie do is COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN! It seemed to all begin when I sent her a Poll stating that she should not run for Senator, or Governor, she was at 12%, and didn't have a chance (unless, of course, she had my Endorsement — which she wasn't about to get!). She has told many people that she is upset that I don't return her phone calls anymore, but with 219 Congressmen/women, 53 U.S. Senators, 24 Cabinet Members, almost 200 Countries, and an otherwise normal life to lead, I can't take a ranting Lunatic's call every day. I understand that wonderful, Conservative people are thinking about primarying Marjorie in her District of Georgia, that they too are fed up with her and her antics and, if the right person runs, they will have my Complete and Unyielding Support. She has gone Far Left, even doing The View, with their Low IQ Republican hating Anchors. Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!

Book cover for A Magnificent Disturbance‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬ (Book 3 of the Rainbow Gap Quartet) by Lee Lynch (Bold Strokes Books‬), with a muted sepia-tinted photo of a boardwalk leading to a white house with a wraparound porch, in front of a distant ocean horizon and palm tree. This is not a good time for Berry Garland to realize her dream of opening a women’s health center. Florida has become more conservative, and “women’s health” raises a red flag. Berry’s intent to serve victims of domestic violence, gay women, migrant workers—documented or not—makes reliance on government funding and the cooperation of local agencies precarious. When the owner of Pansy’s Café donates space, though, MJ Beaudry and her lover Vonnie Lowe’s brother volunteer to revamp the space into a health facility. Berry’s best friend, activist Allison Millar, is disgusted with the frenzied hurricane of right-wing extremism, homophobia, and violence. As mayor of Four Lakes, she helps navigate local bureaucracy. A community of lesbians, neighbors, and patients rises up to protect this critical resource from a shocking saboteur. Despite Berry and her partner Jaudon Vicker’s devastating life changes at home, these everyday dykes and their friends will stop at nothing to see the Center thrive. Their ideals, their wounds, and a steadfast allegiance to one another render them heroes. https://www.boldstrokesbooks.com/books/a-magnificent-disturbance-by-lee-lynch-4701-b Book cover for Glorious Bodies: Trans Theology and Renaissance Literature by Colby Gordon (University of Chicago Press‬), with an angel statue held up by other angel statues. Marking a major intervention in early modern gender studies, Glorious Bodies insists that transition happened, both socially and surgically, hundreds of years before the nineteenth-century advent of sexology. Pairing literary texts by Shakespeare, Webster, Donne, and Milton with a broad range of primary sources, Gordon examines the religious tropes available to early modern subjects for imagining how gender could change. https://press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/chicago/G/bo222253331.html

The footnote from @badinfinity2.bsky.social's Glorious Bodies seems particularly relevant.... (2/2)
Footnote from Colby Gordon's Glorious Bodies: 65. Fine, here is a partial list of Shakespeare's trans characters: Richard II, Goneril, Hotspur but not Hal, Marina, absolutely Hamlet, absolutely not Portia, Touchstone, Colton, Lady Macbeth; everyone except the parents in Romeo and Juliet; and Marc Antony in Julius Caesar but not Antony and Cleopatra. Also, Twelfth Night is not a trans play, but Orsino is absolutely a chaser.

fwiw I think my chapter on Trans Mayhem in Samson Agonistes is the best thing I've ever written
minervavictrix.bsky.social Doctor Minnie @minervavictrix.bsky.social · May 7
"This chapter argues that within Milton’s closet play is a quiet celebration of trans mayhem, an account of wounding that embraces rather than recoils from vulnerability, one that rejects 'usefulness' and 'employment' as metrics for assigning value to bodies."
