Tried the one pot chicken and rice with lemon and olives that's been on the NY Times website yesterday. It was good (made it with more chicken, served it with potatoes) though I am almost wondering if I'd like to split it to two pots in the future. We will see how the leftovers taste! #nytcooking

[Thread of threads]

I'd forgotten I'd made threads as soon as I got here. It wasn't very practical, but I couldn't help myself. 😅

Until I have a system for grouping them on my profile, like on the other network, I'll gather them here. 🖖

On February 12, 1903, American baritone opera singer Todd Duncan was born in Danville, Kentucky. He became the first performer of the role of Porgy in Porgy and Bess, breaking racial barriers in the performing arts.

Todd Duncan – The Trailblazing Baritone of American Opera This elegant black-and-white portrait captures Todd Duncan, a pioneering African American baritone, smiling warmly with a distinguished and confident demeanor. He is wearing a finely tailored pinstripe suit, neatly paired with a crisp tie, reflecting his sophistication and professionalism as a celebrated opera singer. Born on February 12, 1903, in Danville, Kentucky, Duncan made history in 1935 by becoming the first Black performer to play “Porgy” in George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. This was a monumental achievement at a time when racial segregation prevented Black artists from securing major operatic roles. Duncan’s nuanced portrayal of Porgy redefined expectations of Black performers in opera, paving the way for future generations. Beyond his performances, he was also an outspoken advocate for civil rights, refusing to sing in segregated venues. In 1945, he protested segregation at the Washington National Opera, refusing to perform unless Black audience members were granted equal access to seating. His demand for inclusivity marked a crucial moment in the fight for racial equality in the arts. His influence extended into education as a voice professor at Howard University, where he mentored countless Black opera singers, helping them navigate the racial barriers of classical music. His dedication to performance, activism, and mentorship cemented his legacy as a transformative figure in the opera world. Duncan’s commitment to breaking barriers changed the perception of African American musicians in classical music forever. Todd Duncan in Porgy and Bess – A Defining Performance A striking black-and-white theatrical photograph captures Todd Duncan in his iconic role as Porgy in Porgy and Bess, kneeling in front of his co-star, who portrays Bess. He gazes up at her with an expression of longing, his body language portraying a deep emotional connection. Bess, standing against a textured pillar, is draped in a flowing dress, embodying the vulnerability and strength of her character. This production was groundbreaking in 1935, marking the first time a Black performer starred in a major opera with an all-Black cast. Duncan’s vocal and acting abilities brought authenticity to Porgy, reshaping how Black artists were viewed in classical performance spaces. Gershwin personally selected Duncan for the role, recognizing his immense talent and stage presence. However, Duncan’s impact went beyond performance; he rejected segregated performances, ensuring that his art contributed to the broader struggle for racial justice. Porgy and Bess was controversial at the time, both for its depiction of African Americans and for challenging the exclusion of Black artists from opera. Duncan’s refusal to participate in segregated shows was a bold move that helped shift the landscape of American theater. His portrayal of Porgy remains legendary, demonstrating how Black performers could take center stage and excel in roles that had historically been denied to them. This performance was a defining moment in opera, challenging stereotypes and pushing for inclusivity in classical music. Todd Duncan’s Dedication to Music and Education This intimate photograph of Todd Duncan at his desk captures him deeply engaged in musical composition. Seated in a chair, he is dressed in an elegant patterned robe, his facial expression focused as he studies a sheet of music. The surrounding environment exudes creativity and discipline, reflecting Duncan’s dual role as a celebrated performer and devoted educator. After his groundbreaking success on stage, Duncan dedicated himself to teaching, mentoring countless young Black musicians. He became a professor at Howard University, one of the most prestigious historically Black institutions, where he trained future opera singers and classical musicians. His influence extended beyond vocal technique; he emphasized the importance of resilience in an industry that often marginalized Black talent. Many of his students went on to achieve prominence in opera and musical theater, continuing his legacy of excellence. His advocacy for equal opportunities in the performing arts shaped the careers of numerous Black artists. His work in education reinforced the idea that classical music should be accessible to all, regardless of race. By integrating activism into his teaching, Duncan helped dismantle systemic barriers that had long excluded Black performers. His commitment to music education ensured that his impact would extend far beyond his own career, empowering the next generation of Black musicians to pursue their dreams in opera, Broadway, and beyond. Todd Duncan Teaching – Inspiring Future Generations A powerful black-and-white photograph shows Todd Duncan standing in front of a grand piano, passionately instructing a student. His body language is expressive, emphasizing a key musical lesson, while the pianist accompanying him listens attentively. The setting is a formal music hall, highlighting Duncan’s role as both a performer and a mentor. Throughout his career, Duncan was devoted to training the next generation of Black opera singers, offering them the knowledge and guidance to break into the classical music world. He believed in fostering talent through discipline and dedication, ensuring that Black performers had access to the same opportunities as their white counterparts. His career as an educator was as impactful as his time on stage, as he shaped a new era of African American classical musicians. His teachings extended beyond technique, encouraging students to embrace their heritage while mastering classical music. His legacy as a teacher remains strong, as many of his students continued his mission of breaking racial barriers in opera. Duncan’s ability to blend activism, artistry, and education made him an indispensable figure in Black musical history. His work continues to inspire generations of Black musicians striving for excellence in classical music. This image encapsulates his lifelong dedication to music and the empowerment of Black artists in an art form that had historically excluded them.
