Residents who want a cleaner, greener & fairer Newham
Our borough is currently running a review ‘parking & kerbside’ use. It actually only asks about parking & cars with anything else an afterthought.

Other councils in London have approached it differently & this is what we would like to see in Newham!

A park. A street. A journey home.

No woman should have to change her route because she feels unsafe.

I’m investing £15.6m to put women and girls at the heart of redesigning public spaces across the capital.

London won't look away.

Croydon unlawfully removed a safety scheme paid for with public money.

Rightly, TfL have required the money to be repaid & paused future funding - subject to the council submitting a revised plan that meets the requirements.

Lovely to see a family using the brand new pedestrian & cycle crossing on Water Lane in Newham.

The new crossing enables more people to safely use the east/west walking & cycling route which runs from Stratford to Woodgrange.

Great work Newham Council, @newhamsue.bsky.social & team.

Back when i was editor of @lonrec.bsky.social the BBC asked me during an interview if i thought the Elizabeth line would be Sadiq Khan's big legacy for London.

i said:

"no. it's ULEZ expansion."

they looked at me like i had three heads.

Every year though there's more and more proof I was right.
ULEZ was never a crack down on people driving, always a push for better respiratory health.

🚗 💨

“Examinations of London schoolchildren before and after the introduction of the city’s ultra-low emission zone (Ulez) found a restoration of lung capacity […] stunted by exposure to pollution”.

This stopped me in my tracks.

An independent study by @qmul.bsky.social has found that after ULEZ was introduced, children’s lungs grew faster in Central London and have now caught up with children outside of the capital. Incredible.
Air pollution stunts children’s lung growth. New Queen Mary research found that improvements in air quality after the introduction of London’s ULEZ are associated with accelerated lung growth in children.

Wildfire risk is real - and it’s already happening.

We’ve seen fires break out across London after the heat. Dry grass is a tinderbox.

Please do what you can to keep our city safe: take care with barbecues, take litter home and dispose of cigarettes safely.

“Many car owners assume they're fused to their machine, and don't need to walk anywhere. But even extreme users complete 20% of their trips by walking.

This has profound implications. Even if a city claims to be vehicle-oriented, they still need to dedicate 20% of their mobility budget to walking."

Sensible and practical Hammersmith and Fulham Cabinet decision. 🌱

Hammersmith Bridge is still safe for people walking and cycling across the river while the cost of enabling people to drive across again has been escalating.
Tonight’s Hammersmith & Fulham Cabinet meeting has just voted to approve their officers’ recommendation not to pour any more time or energy into the doomed effort to bring cars back over the river here. ✨
