I got to Copenhagen this morning and have been biking around all day and, y'all, I don't know if you've heard about this, but ... this place has pretty good bike infrastructure. You read about it but it's still just mind-blowing to see. Swarms of bikes, everywhere. Swarms!

I'm 1.94m tall and I want this as our car for regional errands, paired with our e-cargo bikes that we use for local errands. Trips further out and the math makes sense to rent a larger vehicle. Smaller and practical design makes sense on our streets and our budgets.

The hostility directed at the mayor from some of the council (particularly Kettle, Juarez, and Rivera) goes way beyond policy differences. It seems visceral and vindictive. Are they still butthurt that she won the election? Where is the hatred coming from?
In this morning's budget meeting, Councilmember Bob Kettle fulminated angrily that the budget should fund an additional 150 police officers a year, without saying how. He also stated confidently that hiring bonuses work to increase lateral hiring, which is not what a study by the city found.

We (civil engineers) take this shit *extremely* seriously. My grumpiest, most disciplinary take is that I've always been deeply uncomfortable with CS calling itself "engineering" because -- individuals as exceptions, of course -- it does /not/ have a safety and ethics culture.
Reminder that in Canada upon becoming an engineer you get an iron ring made of a collapsed bridge, purposely designed to be uncomfortable, to remind you that your ethics demand you give a fuck even about the boring grudgework of such as double-checking your math.

CARE Chief Amy Barden says that in the last 6 weeks, crisis responder utilization has increased to 80%, about double the rate during the same time last year under former Mayor Harrell. Interim SPD Chief Andre Sayles says he’s been pushing rank-and-file cops to divert more calls to thd responders.

This urban planning stuff is easy: make the street kinda skinny so drivers chill out, get rid of the front yards, let the houses touch, plant some trees on the sidewalks, and stripe a bike lane. Do all that, wait 25 years for everything to wear in a bit and boom: you have a pleasant neighborhood.
