"People who overestimate their abilities and worth
often have high self-esteem, but significant problems in their interpersonal and work or school relationships because they have unrealistic expectations of 'what is due to them.'"

Found that in my Family Systems textbook! Sound familiar?

We must stop imagining success as extreme material wealth and hyper-consumption, because by doing this we tie a person's worth directly to their economic participation. This idea says hard work should lead to luxury, and if it doesn't it's your fault, neatly sidestepping systemic obstacles.

First Dolly Parton. Then Tim Curry. Now Gloria Steinem. I think I may need to stop opening Bluesky 😭

While I love that MapQuest is getting attention for refusing to rename Lake Ontario, I don't love that you can't get bus info with them. I guess I am sticking with Magic Earth, an app from the Netherlands, which operates within EU privacy laws, and has bus information for those of us who take buses.

Poverty is a policy choice. Concentrated wealth is a policy choice. Inequality is a policy choice. None of it is natural or inevitable. Remember: We have the power to build a system that serves the many, not the powerful few.

It’s mind-blowing that we have literal white nationalists in the White House carrying out unfathomably cruel, abusive, white nationalist policies, and the punditariat has spent the last two weeks debating if some people were too intemperate after a Black man was murdered by cops six years ago.

If you care about protecting Big Bend, it may be time to rethink where you spend your money. YETI co-founder Ryan Seiders is part-owner of a West Texas ranch that has been facilitating construction tied to Trump’s border wall project in the Big Bend region.

After a 2011 sexual abuse scandal, the national sports organization AAU pledged to implement “historic child protection measures” for the hundreds of thousands of kids in its care.

But ProPublica and @washingtonpost.com found that most of these reforms were never implemented.
A Youth Sports Giant Promised Reforms to Protect Kids From Sexual Abuse. Most Never Happened.
More than a decade after the Amateur Athletic Union promised to implement “historic child protection measures,” it still hasn’t done so, leaving hundreds of thousands of kids at risk. Some AAU athlete...

Headlines: Such-and-such technology may someday be as smart as human brains!

Reminder: *We already have human brains.* Billions of them. Most of them living in poverty and being exploited for the obscene benefit of a tiny number of the worst people in the world.

The worst person in the world competition is full of so many well-qualified contenders.
I’m on a small-ship Alaska cruise with my son; our boat rescued a stranded vessel last night and apparently we did that after the Coast Guard radioed Mark Zuckerberg’s yacht - which was closer - and they repeatedly refused to respond. (There was near unanimous booing when the captain announced this)

Had to report to potential jury duty recently, and I haven't been able to get past one overwhelming thought: There has never truly been a rule of law in this country because the rich can always get away with almost anything while the poor rot in prison because they can't afford high priced lawyers.

This has gotten a lot worse than people trying to keep trans girls from playing sports (which was already bad enough and totally unacceptable). It seems to have evolved into a way to stop all girls from playing sports: Who wants to submit to a bodily autonomy denying examination akin to assault?!?
An initiative on the ballot in Washington state in November would require all athletes seeking to play girl's sports from kindergarten to high school to undergo "genetic screening, a testosterone-levels test, or an examination of their reproductive anatomy" before they can play
