Friends don’t let friends buy books on Amazon.

Invite your friends to shop on Bookshop.org where every purchase supports independent bookstores.

Give your friends 20% off and you'll get 20% off after their first purchase.*
Header for my little corner of Bookshop.org which can be searched for from the homepage or by going directly to https://bookshop.org/shop/Spellbound_BookshopLeslie Small headshot of me ( white woman with shoulder length gray / silver hair ) above the words LESLIE ' S BOOKSHOP Deciding what to read next ? Maybe I can help ! Not shown in image , but here is some background : You can choose any participating independent bookstore to be your " home " store , no matter how far away it is . When you choose a store it will receive a small commission from your purchases , with no extra cost to you . If you do not choose a home store then no commission will be given to an individual store , but your purchases will contribute to the general fund that's distributed evenly among all participating bookstores on a regular basis . I used to own and manage a brick and mortar bookstore . Believe me when I say that indie bookstores need your money more than a certain villainous millionaire . Since closing my physical bookstore , I have kept a foot in the door of the world of books . Currently I work for a regional ( NC ) nonprofit providing ongoing services to survivors of Hurricane Helene and I also work as a book editor on a freelance basis .

I’ve been canvassing for two progressive candidates for almost a week. Mostly I’ve been encouraged by the overwhelming support for them. But the two (out of… dozens) people I encountered who were comfortable saying out loud that they plan to *not vote* are going to wreck me. 😖 I. Just. 😤

Canada is refusing to issue ISBNs to books primarily generated with AI.

This illustrates both the urgency of the problem of the growing flood of slop books, and also the toothlessness of addressing it on the honor system without there also being consequences for lying
Use of artificial intelligence By registering with ISBN Canada, you declare that your book was created by a human author. You may use AI tools only for limited support tasks, such as brainstorming ideas, checking grammar, or formatting your book. You must not use AI to generate the text, create the artwork, or translate the book. ISBN Canada does not issue ISBNs for works whose content is primarily generated by AI. LAC is currently reviewing its policy regarding the use of AI content creation and our guidance is subject to change.

POV: You’re in an office building for a meeting with strangers on the third floor and the elevator door opens to this scene .

Do you get in, take the stairs, or run screaming back outside into the sunlight without looking back?

👀 😳
Photo of elevator door that’s partially open revealing dirty gray quilted blankets hanging from the ceiling and covering the interior of the elevator Are they for soundproofing or padding or to catch spills — who knows ? A wider photo of the blanket against the back wall A closer photo of the same blanket in which it’s easier to see the big dark splotches — or splatters ?
