Work for a soc. justice public school teaching art and comp sci to 3-11 yr olds. Reading is my passion.
Everyone said it would be a turning point in our history even as it was happening. We already knew that. God help me, 25 years later and I'm realizing exactly what we were turning toward. How clearly it is a straight line from then to now. I could cry.

Plenty to reflect about re: the Arday affair, but I'm going to repeat this one thing. The playbook the right used here is effective even though it's not especially sophisticated, as it relies on the audience to do the dirty work. I've been calling it "Trojan horse propaganda", let's go with that. 1/

The Boomer legacy was proving that young people could carve out their own path. The Millennial legacy should be breaking the cycle of hating the next generation for doing the exact same thing.
As Gen Alpha adapts to its unique moment in time, our legacy could be normalizing grace for the young.

Sad about the loss of John Larson in Congress: a champion of working people. Bronin should appreciate that when his campaign emphasized his youth many assumed he was implying that he would usher in new, progressive energy. I hope he honors that expectation.

I have had so many great conversations with people in real life where we talked about critical assessments (of whatever types of media) that I strongly disagreed with. Getting pissed about it is not a bug in a review, it's a feature of the review

If you had a romantic partner look into your eyes and earnestly say "after all... you're my wonderwall" wouldn't the appropriate response be "What the fuck is a 'wonderwall'?"

Just learned that Hitler suffered from extreme flatulence. Like Richard the Lionheart and Ivan the Terrible, he should have this permanently attached to his memory: Adolf the Flatulent. No dramatic representation of him should be without the most undignified fart soundtrack.

The same people who think social safety nets for normal folks would make them lazy also think that limited liability motivates billionaires to be more productive.

"It'll be like growing an errant limb, an extension of myself whose sensory nerves report pain just fine, but whose motor nerves don't convey my commands at all. It's so unfair: I'm going to give birth to an animated voodoo doll of myself" from Ted Chiang's Stories of Your Life

The choice is, as it has been for decades, between those worried about the dangers TO democracy and those worried about the dangers OF democracy

These are the people who get bent outta shape that schools teach about the times America has done awful things. Do they not realize they're committing new atrocities that it will add to that story? If you don't like the US being cast as history's villain, stop doing villainous things.

When they were making the Princess Bride do you think it was obvious to them all that they were making one of the best, most quotable movies of all time?

Any other men curious in what way they've been "abandoned" by the Democratic party? Is it because they endorse Empathy?

Have you ever started typing a post or a text thinking "this observation I'm about to make is super relatable" but halfway through you start to think "maybe I'm the only one who's had this experience"? Or am I the only one who's had that experience?

I just found (and followed) Adrienne Mayor on here! She writes non-fiction that is this cool blend of ancient history, mythology and technology. My favorite is "Gods and Robots"

Always looking for people's recommendations for mind-expanding non-fiction.

Just started Giovanni's Room. My first James Baldwin read. Was drawn by seeing this quotation:

I keep hearing about a rising tide of young progressives running for office against incumbents. I feel like Larson v Bronin has the optics of that, but does it have the substance? Being younger doesn't mean you're a automatically a bigger friend to the little guy

Thank you. Finally, someone citing specific reasons! All I see are people saying "Larson is OLD!" I'm open to Bronin but tell me WHY
