Early Childhood Educator and Forest & Nature School Practitioner in Canada 🇨🇦 advocating for getting kids outside, connecting with nature and all types of play! #playmatters #playoutside
We are often told to sit with the child, ask questions,
and 'narrate' their play. Do you get annoyed when someone is sitting beside you, talking and asking questions? Just let them play. There is no need to build a curriculum around it... just let them play.

I am excited to be presenting at the Manitoba Child Care Conference, The Brilliance of Play: Adventure Awaits.

I get to talk about what math and science in the early years looks like (hint, it looks like play).

I have had the privilege of working with and instructing many passionate early childhood educators.

To all the ECEs, celebrate all you do. To others who know and love an ECE, thank them for the work they do.
Happy Week of the ECE!

Over the years I have learned to embrace mud... all the pouring, digging, creating and exploring. This is where connections are made and learning happens. I need to remember children are washable but the memories being created are so special.

How do you support children in building relationships? I love how groups of children of various ages can come together to plan, create, and support each other.

Children show us what they are feeling and what they need in various ways. We need to understand that when they seem to be pushing us away is when they need us the most.

I had a great time presenting on the importance of Letting Children Play today at the First Nations Early Learning and Child Care conference. Thank you for this beautiful. It will look fantastic in my office! 🙂

Where did these ridiculous phrases we use when talking 'at' children come from? For example "walking feet" "inside voices" 'listening ears" "feet on the floor" or "up the ladder, down the slide". It feels disrespectful and another way of trying to control children.

I have been thinking a lot about the term 'quality'. How much of what we deem quality is adults telling children what to do, where to go, how to play?

When will we start to consider the children's needs in what we define as quality?

Why is there this need to control children? There is this need to move children through their day as a group for the good of the program that the adults have created, withholding and manipulating to get this control.

Thursday night I was virtually in BC! I love how we have grown our ability to reach so far without leaving home. :) I shared the message about building connections with children and the impact that has on all of us.

My first read of 2025. Highly recommend!

I obviously talked about wanting to read this book a lot in December as I almost received 3 copies for Christmas!!

How often do you feel defeated before you even start? When negativity surrounds us we stop looking for the positive. Don't let others put out your fire.
Keep your flame alive!

Do you believe children need to be 'handled' or 'controlled'? Are adults respecting children if we believe we have to handle them? Let's build relationships and trust children.

I love the creativity and ingenuity of children.
Using cardboard, painters tape, ribbon, and a ketchup lid (for the mouse), she created a Laptop. Notice all the details on the Google screen.

You do make a difference. Often we don't realize the difference we have made in that particular moment in someone's life.

One day a child wanted to gift me this potato. I treasured it as much as all the other gifts I have received over the years because he wanted to share it with me.
Do we discuss the importance of connections enough?

I know the importance of children pulling wagons and toboggans, digging in sand, and climbing trees.
The more heavy work they do the stronger their core muscles, arms, wrists, hands and fingers.

What do you consider when choosing toys for the children in your life? How often have you bought a child a toy, and they prefer to play with the box?

It's that time of year again. I take this mug out, which has become a December tradition.

I have received many gifts over the years from the children I have had the honour of caring for and I still have most of them and I can tell you who gave them to me.. except the wine, I drank that wine!

Another great quote from Dr. Jean Clinton's workshop. What does belonging look like for you? How do the children in your programs feel belonging, and does that impact them?
