Every friend group has that one friend who was dissected in 1854 and is now a brain in a jar of formaldehyde, screaming soundlessly from deep within a museum's basement a continent away.

When I started making artwork that directly dealt with my experiences with depression, reading about what Darwin went through was really eye-opening.
Hope your day was better than Darwin’s, on this day 165 years ago

This is the definition of cruel and unusual punishment. The state of Tennessee botched an execution and tried to hide the gory consequences as witnesses twice watched a woman survival the supposedly “lethal” injection. The death penalty is a crime against humanity.

With the evolving Cornell University story, I have been reflecting on my fourth and final year at St. Thomas University in 2015 in Fredericton.

One of my professors, Jan Wong, wanted some of our class to work on an investigative series on rape on campus.

This is *the* piece. Kate Manne, professor of philosophy at Cornell, speaks truth to the totality of failures at the university — and why students protesting the war in Gaza have faced far harsher consequences than any of the Cornell 7:

What It Feels Like at Cornell Right Now
As a professor at the Ivy League school, Kate Manne has known many, many victims. There’s a palpable feeling on campus, she writes, that this is big.

Your life will be much better without this kind of "friend" in it. A fantastic reward in and of itself.
you will be rewarded with:
- uncomfortable silence probably
- maybe you will lose that friend idk is that such a big deal

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

All of this is happening to college students at the very beginning of their adult lives.

It shapes everything that comes after. And it shapes society for the rest of us too.

Imagine what our world would look like if all of those women had been able to complete their educations, free from violence.

Kat is right about all of this.

One of the reasons that college sexual violence is uniquely devastating is because it changes the victim’s entire future.
What about her future? What about how hard she worked to be there? What is to become of her life now? What process of justice could possibly right these wrongs? And how much more will she lose in the process of trying to get it? How much more of this are we all supposed to tolerate?

Campus rape is really widespread; statistics suggest a significant percent of women who go to college will be raped there; feminism opened up a good conversation about it around 2012-13; it's weird when people treated Cornell like an isolated rather than dramatic example of a pervasive problem.

“Why were these men allowed to “pursue their education in a secure and nourishing environment” and she was not? Why was she not informed of the outcome of her own Title IX investigation? Who benefited from the 23 months of elapsed time when the public knew nothing?”
EDITORIAL | Cornell Won’t, We Will
The Editorial Board demands that Cornell stops protecting the alleged Chi Phi rapists through the University's opaque sexual assault policies.

Have you ever tried to read a scientific journal article and been told “you don’t have access, pay to download this article?”

Did you know that the author of that article gets $0 if you pay?

Instead, you can email the author and ask for a free copy! I’d be delighted to help and answer questions!

my latest: Massachusetts is one of the safest states for trans people—but multiple hospitals preemptively ended youth trans care over Trump admin threats to cut fed funding.

on Wed, trans activists took their HRT at a govt office and refused to leave without a commitment to fight those hospitals.
Even in safe-haven Massachusetts, trans care is at risk. Young people are fighting to protect it
Activists are calling on the state attorney general to take action against hospitals that have ended gender-affirming care programs after Trump retook office

one day, this administration will be effectively over. and we’ll probably do some collective pondering on what’s next.

colleges could seize that opportunity to reassert the value of college as a public good as opposed to career prep. i think the ones that do will be the future of HE.
