Medical Negligence or Psychiatric Malpractice?
A new book takes a fresh look at a landmark ruling that changed the path of American psychiatry.

Shyness didn't become a disorder by accident.

In SHYNESS, Christopher Lane traces its redefinition as treatable, with Paxil/Seroxat sold as the answer — positioned as "safe + effective" while the cost of stopping the drug was whitewashed away.

Book history, not medical advice.

What happens when a “major issue” gets published as “well-tolerated”?

Christopher Lane looked at the paroxetine archive — the documents where internal and external accounts of drug withdrawal sharply divide.

He exposes all of the whitewash in SHYNESS: HOW NORMAL BEHAVIOR BECAME A SICKNESS

How did shyness become a diagnosis that needs a pill?

In SHYNESS: HOW NORMAL BEHAVIOR BECAME A SICKNESS, Lane exposes the paper trail - including paroxetine (Paxil/Seroxat) reactions described as a "major issue" internally vs. "generally well-tolerated" in pubs.

Book history, not medical advice.

Same ghostwritten deck. 3 cities. 3 different experts presenting it as their own.
Consensus or plagiarism?

That's the KOL machine. "You'll see this in your patients" didn't come from clinical experience. It was delivered to it — to sell the chemical imbalance narrative.

A crucial distinction Lane recovers from the archives: a result can be produced that may be statistically significant yet clinically negligible.
The question in Chapters 7-8 is what happens when that distinction is lost in translation — when a p-value becomes a promise.

Ch. 7-8 of SHYNESS: Lane shows how APA archives & classified pharma memos reveal how KOLs, industry symposia & CME turned a negligible drug-placebo difference into a "major" clinical outcome.
Video #3: THE KOL MACHINE
The data didn't change. The delivery system did.

How does a negligible difference become dogma?

Ghostwritten slides, lectures, CME. The same graph on tour. The same line: "You'll see this in your patients."

Not a new study. Just repetition — until it became what every doctor thought they understood.

Media coverage of SSRI overprescribing is sharply polarized.

Some outlets present with nuance, detailing what isn’t known.

Others talk of a “war” against antidepressants.

New Battlelines Are Drawn Over Antidepressants
Recent efforts to deprescribe SSRI antidepressants are raising flags over conflicting evidence, leading to polarized reports.

Playbook: A tiny statistical difference becomes a big promise on the KOL circuit. Hide negatives, ghostwrite, pay KOLs for CME. "You'll see it in patients." Repetition > data.

Same slide, same line. Different city every week.

That's how the consensus was made.

A tiny effect became a "chemical imbalance" via KOL leaders + a paid CME tour.
Repetition turned hype into dogma.

The part no ad mentions: most people on placebo improve. Some on a drug also improve.

Everyone gets care, attention, expectation.

Hide the trials where placebo does just as well, and a fractional edge looks like a breakthrough.

That's a billion-dollar editing trick. Lane gives the unedited cut.

The loophole isn't that they hid negative trials. They reported them to the FDA, as required by law.

The loophole: reporting to the FDA is mandatory. Publishing in a journal is not.

Negatives went in a file drawer, not your doctor's library.

That's publication bias from inflated efficacy.

How shyness got a billing code:
Before 1980: no diagnosis.
After the vote: 300.23.
Code = market. Market = 6-8 week trials.
FDA saw all the data. You didn't.
Lane put it back in SHYNESS.

El voto de 1980 no se quedó en la consulta, se metió en tu navegador.

Tras los anuncios del 99 vinieron los test de 3 min: — "¿Te sonrojas? ¿Miedo a fiestas?"

3 sí = "habla con tu médico."

Parecían médicos, eran ganchos de las farmacéuticas.
September 3, 2026 at 8:16 PM

Si no, engavetado.

It was not awareness. It was acquisition — distributed by vote, then by ad, then by browser.
This isn’t anti-therapy. It’s pro-transparency.
Sources: Lane, Shyness, 2007. DTC web archives.
The damage from the vote didn’t stop at the doctor’s office.
It showed up in a browser.

Millions of teens took them. Alone. In school computer labs. On dial-up.
The 1980 vote gave us code 300.23.
The 1999 ads gave us TV spots.
The 2000s gave us quizzes.
This isn’t anti-help. It’s pro-history.
Sources: Archived DTC sites, 2000-2006.
Did you take one of those quizzes at 14?
August 14, 2026 at 6:53 PM
In 1980: a vote created a code.
In 1999: TV ads told adults to ask about it.
The 2000s: websites told kids "Do you blush? Fear parties?" 3 yes = "You may have Social Anxiety. Talk to your doctor."
Many quizzes were pharma-funded lead generators. Not diagnosis.

What happened to negative Paxil studies? If it outbeat placebo: Published. If not: Filed. GSK goal: Turn shyness into illness. 1980 vote + 1999 approval + sealed data = their narrative. Now unsealed. Not anti-science—pro-ALL-science. Sources: Turner 2008, Lane 2007. #PublicationBias #PaxilPapers

Public, 1999: "Imagine being allergic to people."
Private: "New disease entity." "Create a need for treatment."
Same company. Same year.
1980: code 300.23 created. 1999: plan to monetize it.
Not conspiracy. Correspondence.

Never supposed to leave Glaxo.
1999: Paxil for Social Anxiety.
Public: "Allergic to people"
Private: "Create a need"
Beat placebo = published.
Didn't = filed.

It was not education. It was acquisition.1980 vote gave Pharma code 300.23. Ads gave them patients.1999: Paxil. 2003: Zoloft.Behavior existed before 1980; the $2.4B ad market did not.One vote opened the door. Ad budgets walked 15M people through it.Pro-transparency, not anti-therapy.
