Certain gay men and lesbians have grown paranoid that too much acceptance of trans people could lead to the over-medicalization of gender nonconformity, ie 'transing the gay away.'

Let's talk about this. 🧵

Medicalization of the death penalty is bad stuff on a number of levels.

*medicalization of pregnancy I meant to type.

Yeah how's that medicalization going etc

the faux-medicalization of the death penalty serves one purpose: absolving society of its shame for executing humans

What types of medicalization

What types of medicalization, motherfucker

I really don't like this 25A medicalization talk. "Fail a mental fitness test"? That frames this as if it's some unproven possibility of a particular mental illness, which is totally irrelevant. I don't care what boxes he checks in the DSM-5. That he's unfit for office is not a medical diagnosis.
TAKANO: Should Trump fail a mental fitness test, would you vote to invoke the 25th amendment?

RFK Jr: There hasn't been a president who is more sane--

TAKANO: Reclaiming my time. Would you invoke the 25th amendment?

RFK Jr: President Trump is the most stable--

TAKANO: Apparently not

I bring a sort of "bodily autonomy for everyone, your doctor is an adversary" vibe to the HRT conversation that pro-medicalization trans girls really don't like

obviously trying to stake out social problems as "addiction" is part of a process of medicalization that's not always helpful but fucking come on taylor, these are products explicitly designed to be compulsive and they haven't been about "chatting with your friends" for years
Can social media be addictive?

@taylorlorenz.bsky.social says no.

“You wanting to communicate and chat with your friends every day is not an addiction,” says Lorenz. “And to frame it that way is incredibly harmful and anti-science.”

We deserve to just go to a pharmacy and pick it up over the counter.

Fuck medicalization
Transgender people deserve to walk into their doctor’s office or a clinic, get a script, and pick up/order their hormones at a lawfully-operated, licensed pharmacy *in their own country* without jumping through a billion stupid hoops or doing any extra bullshit. Same as any cisgender person.

*taking my top off*

behold, the dangers of trans medicalization

UGH THANK YOU

One thing I had to do to write my book was do some deep dives into the medicalization of trans identities, because of how that medicalization suppressed our gender diversity.

What I found made me *incendescently* angry.

Did you know that the first standard of care was to stop our transitions?
Gurl, you think that's bad?

Until 1994--31 years ago--one of THE deciding factors of whether or not you would be allowed to transition is if your shrink thought that you would be conventionally attractive to straight men after you transitioned

Your transition depended on whether he'd bang you.

All these politicized reviews just outright lie and say that WPATH recommends medicalization as a default. It's really weird.

It doesn't take much to read between the lines here: they are MAHA-ing federal dollars for birth control, framing contraception as "unnecessary medicalization" and
symptom suppression"
April 6, 2026 at 11:34 PM
"no path backwards for my medicalization" is also a backhanded "trans women are biologically men and their medical transition does nothing." lovely stuff

Thinking about writing an essay about medicalization and its role in trans oppression 🤔
July 21, 2025 at 7:24 PM
"The medicalization of our bodies is bad so we shouldn't take hrt" vs. "Medicalization is unavoidable, we are medicalized from birth, take hrt and don't tell your doctors"

People get mad at Mark Fisher but this is, quite literally, what he meant with the individual medicalization of the political. They’re trying to call you stupid, depressed, and psychotic for caring about the murders and camps.
Execs at Oracle, the likely new owner of TikTok, are VERY outspoken in Israeli media about the company's "mission to support the State of Israel" & "unequivocal support for Israel."

Insufficiently pro-Israel Oracle staff receive mental health counseling. responsiblestatecraft.org/oracle-tikto...
Oracle execs: Love Israel or maybe this isn't the job for you
Employees who disagreed were reportedly referred to company mental health services

I think a lot of trans people are primed to be conservative because they only conceive of themselves through the medicalization of their identity, failing to recognize how that medicalization itself is shaped by revanchist and conservative ideas and more limiting than it is liberating

Anyway read former surgeon general Atul Gawande's Being Mortal. Really helps clarify what's gone so sideways in our medicalization of old age and death.
