Mutual cooperation is the optimal game theory strategy for most complicated games. It is smart to be kind. But the cooperation cannot be naive. Part of intelligent cooperation is working together to shut down bad faith actors.

Can you imagine if the Democratic party pulled its head out of its ass, whipped the party line to be supporting trans people, and then set aside funds and some logistics admins for a program called "Trans People Against Fascism", to support any trans person who wants to get organizing?

Every single newspaper that reported that Jane Doe “changed her story” should be rushing to publish retractions right now.

This case should be a lesson in taking a DA’s victim-blaming statements at face value. Victims do not report to the police because they thought nothing happened to them.

One of the reasons that researchers suspect police react to sexual assault disclosures that way is because the rate of sexual violence perpetration among police is much higher than the general population.

We've already been talking about the systemic mistreatment of sexual assault victims at Cornell. Now, let's talk about New York police.

One of the best available insights is into the New York City Police Department who commissioned an independent review of their sexual assault unit in 2021.

The reason cases stalled out is that New York City police only opted to interview 28% of identified suspects.

In other words, they had enough information to move forward with a case, but they chose not to do it.

This is the kind of justification schools used for banning my book on campus sexual violence.

If we say out loud what they did, they say it’s hurting survivors because no one will trust them enough to report anymore.

Silence isn’t a solution. We needed change decades ago.
Cornell PR: "A continuation of the false narrative that there were minimal consequences in this case is irresponsible, will make victims feel less safe and supported, and will perpetuate the underreporting of sexual assault."

I've said it before and I'll say it again:

US police actively prevent consequences for rapists by hitting victims with a wall of demoralizing hostility and skepticism, and then using their institutional credibility to undermine victim testimony and sabotage evidence and process steps.
Survivors often report to their schools because they need an intervention and do not want police involved. And they have good reason to distrust them. The criminal justice system is another common source of institutional betrayal.

I wrote this whole thread this before I had time to read yesterday's NYT story.

And everything I'm talking about here is what actually happened to Jane Doe. She has been consistent in her story, but a game of telephone between people invested in not believing her led them to claim otherwise.

whenever we get close to seeing a systemic problem with policing, media rushes to frame it as a training problem. however, police culture is at the core of its mistreatment of victims and rape cases.

policing is a tool of white supremacy AND *male* supremacy
yet the lack of training wasn't the issue here, so why are we bringing it up.

Shut down all fratnerities. I am so for real.

Segregation of men and women teaches men to dominate and women to participate in their objectification.

Men, if you care about women, and want to do something to stop rape culture, leave your frat. Then shut it down.
Fraternity men perpetrate sexual violence at a rate three times higher than other college men.

The fraternity lobby is one of the most powerful in DC—and they consistently oppose any bill for survivors’ rights.
