Today I drove past Wendy’s, and the bushes in the parking lot were on fire. No water truck, but a fire chief was standing next to the fire, looking kind of helpless and flustered. Seems like a metaphor for something. Having a hard time figuring out what though….
This seems to be getting less attention than it should
New from 404 Media: we solved which AI company is buying massive shipments of rare books, scanning and destroying them to train AI.

We put an Apple AirTag in a rare book, followed it. It ended up at an Amazon facility. Its logo is a dinosaur ripping through a book www.404media.co/we-tracked-a...

Seems like we maybe have a problem assessing what it means to be “smart” when our main proxy for measurement is academic achievement at the kinds of elite institutions that have given us such paragons of intelligence and good judgment judgment as Pete Hegseth or Jared Kushner or Bari Weiss
Professor Moyn is pretty far down the list of commentators whose finger-wagging merits attention. Smart guy, lousy judgment.

Every once in a while I remember that I have forgotten the names of two bands from about a decade ago, one of which sounded like lo-fi Morrissey singing over fuzzed out JAMC guitars. The other was described as an indie rock super group but definitely isn’t whoever you’re thinking of right now.*

If you’ve had the misfortune of knowing who Bari Weiss is as long as I have, it’s because you remember the racist, anti-muslim shit she did as a Columbia student
SCOOP from me:

CBS owner Paramount squashed an internal panel discussion on the Arab-American experience amid the Gaza war that featured prominent pro-Palestine activist Alana Hadid – all while holding multiple pro-Israel panels, one that included Batya Ungar-Sargon.

Hardly the most important thing, but it’s worth at least acknowledging that an American president wore a damn baseball cap to announce he’d launched an illegal war

The funniest part of this is that they unfired the pilot because no one else could fly them home.

Almost as funny: Lewandowski firing people for not giving him his little plastic sheriff’s badge. These people are violent morons, but they’re still morons
“.. Noem and Lewandowski frequently berate senior level staff, give polygraph tests to employees they don’t trust and have fired employees—in one incident, Lewandowski fired a U.S. Coast Guard pilot after Noem’s blanket was left behind on a plane ..”

Having literally written the book on the National Prayer Breakfast -- borne of the idea that God cares more for the rich and powerful than everyone else -- I can say this is the rare instance where Trump's grotesqueness is deeply appropriate.
Trump at National Prayer Breakfast: "They rigged the second election. I had to win it. I needed it for my own ego. I would've had a bad ego for the rest of my life. Now I really have a big ego. Beating these lunatics was incredible ... The first time they said I didn't win the popular vote. I did"
